Are there other endgames that are important?

Hi,

I’m not sure why you say 6 specifically, but as mentioned already basic mating with just the queen and rook, knowing the basics of promoting with just a pawn and when and how it can be prevented from promoting (basic opposition techniques), why and when rook pawns can often be stopped from promoting, and square of the pawn are likely the main beneficial ideas in endgame you’ll want to know that could lift your overall game and confidence if you reach an endgame. I’m happy to show you these ideas on Chess.com’s classroom as well, could take less than an hour and then you can practice further to cement the ideas, message me if you’d like to do that. Have fun reaching your 600 rating goal!

Aside from whats already been stated i think pawn endgame study and some stalemate tactics could be usefull. If you enjoy chess and you know youll be playing it for a longtime, studying things " beyond your rating" can be usefull since you will improve and use it eventually. I started studying 1 opening for white and 2 for black when i was 900 and finished 100 endgames you must know when i was 1100. Now i wasnt having to display a lucena position right away in my games but it opend up my preception to different ideas an thus helped me improve. I think i only remember 20% of what i studied for openings but understanding the ideas/ pawn breaks thematic tactics is what i try to focus on. Best of luck.

Knight , Bishop & king vs oppo king and pawn

Rook & king vs oppo king and rook

Two pawns & king vs oppo king and a pawn

Also  make sure to study the Lucena positions; an example of high-level endgame chess!

Or how Magnus just beat Eric Hansen with a trick in a knight vs. bishop + equal pawn structure endgame.

That's the thing with beginners; you gotta start practicing the advanced stuff unless you want to stay a beginner. You can handle it: aim for the stars!

It's not true that you have to start at a beginner level; you can study all levels at the same time.

Hi,

That’s not a practical idea at all, simply look at how we teach in Academia, we don’t sit down with 1st graders at school and say, “Open your textbooks to page 1 of your Calculus book please!” No, we start with the simple maths and build up to the advanced maths. Chess is similar, there’s little point sitting down to study advanced chess material when you lack the basics. It’s like these kids who study an opening and blitz off 10-12 moves of theory then hang their knight the next move. What good did that do them? Learning in a structured way that builds players up with a strong foundation is always going to lead to more successful learning experience, learn to walk before you try to run as they say.

A beginner should learn the 5 basic checkmates:
KQ vs. K, KR vs. K, KBB vs. K, KBN vs. K, KNN vs. KP.
