What would be the best openings for 100 - 800 rated players?

So maybe try a few things and see what you like. I like to test out new things on the Classroom board on this site. Or I practice on bots until I get comfortable. Then I can just play the opening and quit, rather than having to commit to a whole game.

Play in Guest mode @ Beginner level.  That way, you won’t worry about losing or hurting your rating.

However please be advised: only 1 in 7 players in “Beginner” are actually beginners; the other 6 are intermediate or advanced.  Sometimes it’s as bad as 1 beginner for every 33 intermediate/advanced.

Not sure why it works out that way.

I started by watching the gotham videos, and he recommended London System for white. Its easy to learn and can play it against anything. I have since tweaked it to a Jobava London with a little opening trap.

Gotham videos are good 4 openings

I don't understand why low rated players are so fixated on openings. There are many parts of a chess game, the opening is arguably the least important, and yet it is that every low rated layer ever thinks about. Weird.

I can't speak for others, but the reason I started learning openings is because most of my opponents seem to know them, and if I don't respond precisely, I obtain a huge disadvantage very quickly. I'd rather lose because of some tactical oversight in the middle game or because my endgame knowledge is weak rather than resigning on move six due to some trap my opponent has been practicing.

I can relate. When I crossed 1400, I got annoyed with playing into my opponents d4 preparation. So a coach and I worked out two side lines against d4 where I can steer the game.

Since, then the game has been more enjoyable and playable. No more tricks or traps, just a playable middle game with counter play and winning chances.

I don’t also burn up the clock in the opening phase either leaving more time for middle game planning and spotting tactics.

Hi! My name is Lauren Goodkind and I’m a respected  chess coach and chess YouTuber who helps beginners out :

Send me one of your games and I'll be happy to analyze the game for free on my YouTube channel.

You need to find an opening that works for you.  Everybody has their own personal preference.  Typically, beginners play e4 and e5.  This an excellent start.

Try the Spanish Opening (Ruy Lopez) as white.

I hope that this helps.

It's because we (newer players) have all experienced the hell of finding yourself hopelessly on the defensive because of a mistake in the first 3 or 4 moves....that didn't seem like a mistake. As I have said, it's really hard to  win the game in the first couple moves, but it's easy to lose it in those first few.  Experienced players think ahead and think about planning for middle and end games. Beginners are just sweating to get TO the middle game, so yeah, all they're thinking about is openings. Kinda makes sense, I think.

I think the Italian is great because it forces you to get good at tactics.
Play knight attack against the two knights defence, Deutz or Evans gambit against the Giuoco Piano.
That's how I started anyhow.

Probably a good start is the Pirc Defense

Okay, so i am a bit new to chess, and so far, i have been doing a decent job. However, I want to boost my rating, so what would be the best opening for white(if you are a beginner), and for black(also for beginners)?

Don't make it complicated! Keep playing with e4 e5, it is the BEST opening for beginners to learn the fundamentals early!

A hypermodern opening that gives you a space disadvantage straight away, with knowledge of various pawn breaks required? How could that possibly be good for a beginner?

Tbh I can't even play the Pirc Defense...

Pick 1 Basic opening 1e4 is good, and defense, and play hundreds of games. The opening will not be the biggest factor in whether you win or lose at beginner levels.... Unless you fall for traps like scholars mate. Probably not even a huge factor at medium levels either. When you get to high levels of us the opening or defense can give you a slight advantage that you can do exploit or such.

How has it worked out for you?

The Traxler is good for Black, especially at this level, but DO NOT play it until you have learned enough Theory.

The Traxler is terrible

Where is black's counterplay?

Kings Gambit for white. Lots of great lessons to be learned in this opening about development and attack ... because if you don't do those ASAP, things go really wrong!
