Why am I so terrible

Why am I so bad at chess? I have watched videos and studied openings, and played games with longer time controls, but I am not improving that much. Is there something I am missing??

First of all, you are playing 10|0 time control, which is still pretty fast. On top of that, you started playing those games 10 days ago. Progress do not come that fast. It will take weeks, sometimes months in order to see some progress.

You should at the very least play 15|10. You need to slow down and think on your moves in order to not give free stuff to your opponent.

Your first goal is to follow opening principles and to avoid giving free stuff to the opponent.

Good luck.

Honestly it’s about the mindset in my opinion. You can regurgitate openings all day but if you can’t respond to what’s on the playing field you won’t be as good as you want to be

Try doing some puzzles. I see you've only done six, which means you might miss some common checkmate/material-winning patterns that come up a lot. Unfortunately, Chess.com only gives you three a day without a membership, so I recommend Lichess. https://lichess.org/training/mix

In addition, don't study openings. Know basic concepts (take the center, develop quickly, castle), but don't learn any theory. It's really not a good use of your time.

Focus on developing a tactical eye, check each move for hanging pieces or major threats. Hope this helps.

Mindset's the biggest part imo, take your time and go back and analyze each game afterwards. Look at each of your moves that caused your evaluation to go down and take the time to understand what the mistake was, and it'll help you when you encounter the same situation later.

Also, take some time each day to do at least a few puzzles, they really help you spot common patterns that can win you advantage.

Perhaps we could message if you are interested in some more tailored advice on why; not everyone improves super quickly, but doesn't mean you are bad at chess or slow at learning. I know one person who took over 5 years to cross 1400 but became 2000+ the following year! (although this is an extreme example where they studied extensively in that year).

Those 3 things will likely not make you a significantly better player right now. At your level, games are decided by tactical mistakes where you win or lose a piece in 1 move. If you want to improve you need to stop giving your own pieces away and win their pieces whenever you can. Of course the question will be 'how can I do that'? You'll want to learn about what different kind of tactics there are, how can you can try and find tactics (tactical solving strategies) and then practice enough tactics to start recognizing the patterns. It's not something you can improve in a day, but with enough practice and dedication, it'll get better. Another good thing is to go over your own games and try and look where you gave a piece away or where you could have taken/won a piece of theirs. Just focus on those tactical chances for now. If you or your opponent missed a chance, ask yourself what you could've done differently and why you didn't see the tactic beforehand. Tactics, tactics, tactics are the name of the game at your level.

Hi! My name is Lauren Goodkind and I’m a respected  chess coach and chess YouTuber based in California:

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCP5SPSG_sWSYPjqJYMNwL_Q

I love helping others get better at chess.  Therefore, here’s some ideas to help you get better.

-I recommend two books for you: “50 Poison Pieces”   and “Queen For A Day: The Girl’s Guide To Chess Mastery.”  Both books are available on Amazon.com.  Both books are endorsed by chess masters!

-If you are serious about chess, I highly recommend you hiring a chess coach to help you.

-Also consider all checks and captures on your side and also your opponent’s side. Always as, “If I move here, where is my opponent going to move?”. Do this for every single move!

-Play with a slow time control, such as G/30 so you have plenty of time to think before every move.

I also offer 500 two-choice puzzles on my website: https://www.chessbylauren.com/two-choice-puzzles.php

If you want me to analyze a chess game that you played for my YouTube channel (free of charge), share the game with me.

I hope that this helps.

play more games to improve board vision

i doubt extensively studying openings and videos and such will matter if you can't see the bishop pointing at your queen

i don't study games, analyze, study openings, or play long games unless you consider 10+0 rapid to be a long time control

i was 200-400 for probably almost 2 months because my board vision was garbage

i played enough games and my rating went up because as i played more and did more puzzles so my board vision got better and i gave fewer pieces away for free

that is my advice to you

play more and do puzzles

Learn to not blunder !

It will be the good starting point for you... in order to progress further.

So I think.

Too subtle? I was actually thinking B1Z, but I've also heard the same for one or two other people as well. That is why I adjusted the time-frame and rating to include the others too. Wasn't @B1ZMARK stuck sub-1200 (and then crossed 2000 within a year)? I've heard rare, yet similar, stories from a few other chess players too.

Play longer games. I saw your last game and for example you lost your Queen just for nothing. You have to more think about moves.
