He was born in Azerbaijan which was part of the Soviet Union which was not really Russia. But he's Russian now. So you're right.

It's not his original name. The original name is Garry Kimovich Weinstein. Off hand, I don't think Garry sounds very Russian.

But Garry Kasparov's  'real' name (the one he was born with) was : Garik Kimovich Weinstein.

He is not really Russian (but is Soviet - born in Baku, Azerbaijan.)
