Gary Kasparov?

Kasparov is not Russian.

Gary Kasparov was not born in Russia, but the referent was to the name, not the person. The name "Gary Kasparov" is a Russian-sounding name.

It's not his original name. The original name is Garry Kimovich Weinstein. Off hand, I don't think Garry sounds very Russian.

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you: Man missing the point.

I was replying to someone else's comment, not yours. As for the original question, I am not interested in it and therefore didn't say anything about it.

You are not far away from the real thing. Chesov is a surname. I looked it up on facebook ;-)

Which eastEuropean/Russian-sounding name sounds the most impressive (but not too risqué ) for a World Chess Champion?

We're making good progress. Once we have the name nailed down, all we need to do is find the talent - and we're away.

Hello. My name is Givap. Givap Orluz.

OK, I Givap. Who gave you that crazy name?

(p.s If this is your real name, what an enchanting name you have.)

But Garry Kasparov's 'real' name (the one he was born with) was : Garik Kimovich Weinstein.

He is not really Russian (but is Soviet - born in Baku, Azerbaijan.)

I thought Garry in Russian would be Garri ?

But he's not Russian. He's Azerbaijani.

kco

I know that he is from Azerbaijani but I was referring to mkirk's comment saying that his real name is "Garik" for Garry, I thought is was Garri ?

ivandh

I know a guy named Garic, but so far as I know he is neither Russian nor Azerbaijani.

Really the only reason I am in this thread is so that I can say Azerbaijani.

Madya sounds Mongolian - which would be Asian not European - as if anyone was counting.

We need a pronunciation guide!
