why does chess .com allow certain players to use foul and abusive language my grandchildren watch while i play and i dont want them to see this

kohai

We don't allow it.

This is a family site. There should be no reason at all to be abusive or offensive.
We have alot of members here who bring their small children onto the site to learn and play chess and they don't expect to be subjected to abusive language, but that said the site is designed to appeal to a broad audience.

With over four million members, hoping that they all abide by the ToS is a long shot.

TheMouse2

if you don't want to see the foul language you can disable the chat.

If I'm not mistaken, you can disable the chat for every single game separately. If your grandchildren watch, I would advise to close the chat when playing people you don't know.

i like to chat and banter with has many people as possible but i do not use such language so iexpect them to do same after all we are only playing chess

I have found it best to lower one's expectations when dealing with random strangers. You never know who/what you are dealing with.

And reporting them to chess.com will get results, up to and including their eviction from the site.

Sad that the offered solution is for everyone to expect the bad language, rather than using the technology to prevent it in the first place -- especially since it's Chess.com policy. As a software developer I say "shame on you Chess.com" and "shame on you posters for suggesting those seeking clean fun need to lower their expectations and endure it." Alter the chat programs to disallow certain words. An obvious solution and one keeping with Chess.com policy.

These are your own friends you're complaining about?  Why not say something to them instead of expecting the "problem" to be handled for you?

Shame on this & shame on that. I think we should ban scolding moralists from chess.com.

i've never understood why ppl get so bent out of shape over a few words...they're just words with little to no meaning at this point....profanity--not gonna kill you

I agree. I have posted in forums and have met with only rude responses. I am considering closing my account because my posts cannot be removed and I don't want any fingerprint on this site.

cmid21

Just disable chat every game against players you do not know. Problem solved..

catnapper

I don't believe closing your account will remove your posts, perhaps the threads you started. And why do you feel the need to post your intent in the forum?

OP: So how to you keep your grandchildren hearing such language when you go the the shops? Or to the park? Or any place other people are gathered? None of those places have a way to censor, at least here you can disable the chat and be done with them. You can also block offenders so you don't have to play them again, nor can they bother you. Frankly, I don't really understand your complaint.

19john45

if i disable chat how will i meet new friends

catnapper

I don't know if you are talking turn-based or live, and since I don't play live I can't say for certainty. With turn-based you disable the chat after they are offensive. That way you can "meet" them and if they are not to your liking disable the chat for that game. If they are really offensive, you can block them and they can't even send you a message. For live, I imagine it is the same, or you can toggle the chat on and off. At any rate, when someone gets offensive you can block them. OR, here's a novel idea, if someone uses foul language tell them it offends you and your grandchildren are watching the game and would they please refrain from using it. You know, kind of like you would do if you were sitting in a room with them.

except for the friends i already have if ican remember i will disable chat with everybody else
