Start with a digital camera.
Resize the picture down to 100x100 pixels approx (possibly using PAINT).
Click on your name to reach your profile.
Click on CHOOSE FILE (next to image).
Also, you'll need to refresh your browser cache for you to be able to see the picture.

That's exactly how it works!
1. Find a picture you like (smallish).
2. Right click on it and select "save as", give it a file name you will remember.
3. Return to this site, click the "change picture" (or whatever) next to the avatar space.
4. hit "browse" and load the file you selected.
5. Hit "Ctrl" and "r" simultaneously.

any image will do!

flickr is good for such things. flickr is free and resizes photos for you. i don't think it does 100x100px, but it will do quite small images.
if you use paint, choose save as png. trust me, paint is a woefully bad program when it comes to saving jpgs. png is good enuf for an image avatar.
and if you want to resize the photo yourself, download google's picasa. it's almost idiot proof!!! lol ... load your image, crop it to your satisfaction, export and tell it the size you want. presto!

Let's see-- to disdain = to regard with haughty contempt, or to despise . . .
Ya know, it occurs to me that I've never properly categorized my own reasons for disdaining others. And reserving some criteria as "special" is sheer genius! I bow to a Master of despisal. Would that I couldst myself someday attain such lofty levels of superbity . . .

Hi folks: I've got it, and I hope everyone will be suitably intimidated. Many thanks for all the helpful hints. Just one point to add to your rundown, PEP: one also needs to save the changes - as the button wasn't visible on the page I had a number of false starts! Just shows how computer illiterate some of us still are! 
Could some kind person please tell me how to get a photo and add it to my profile? Thanks a lot!
