A positional struggle.

The below game is quite interesting and is mainly positional, I was black and I believe I missed my winning chance on move 34.

Please give your opinions and criticism.

Thanks.

Thanks, I think move Bxe4 was far worse than I first thought, Bd7 was also possible.

I like 30...BxN, followed by 31...ef. I would like to keep the knight against the bishop in a postion like that.Smile

That moves makes more sense, at that point in the game, I was getting low on time and just playing for the draw, which was a mistake.

your opponent got a messed up pawn structure going into the end game. and you just helped him improve it by capturing the bishop! you are right 34. ... Bd7 should have been better. your queen side pawn majority will carry you in winning this game. anyway, thanks for sharing your game!

8. ... Bd7 doesn't strike me as the most obvious move.  Did you consider e5 followed by Be6? His idea of queenside play is actually a little slow, it might not be a bad idea to play agressively in the center.

10. ... Qc8 also strikes me as unnatural.  Perhaps e6 preparing Ne7 and Bc6.  Opposing his good bishop and further controlling d5.  The nice thing about this setup is that you can also prepare an f5 break.  White might get b4 in but your play may be worth more.  Worth calculating.

at first glance I'm happy with quite a few of your next moves.

23. ... h5 must be a mistake.  White is preparing f4, there's no reason to give him something to bite on.  (If this doesn't make sense, what I'm saying is that after f4-f5 and a trade on g6... your options are limited because you cannot take on f5 without losing g5... white can trade on g6, creating a weak pawn structure (g6 is only defended by your king and not a great base) and h5 is only a target.)

24. ... Qd8 doesn't make much sense either.  Your f6 knight is misplaced if you're looking to advance your F pawn (I suppose that's your only try for activity) why not pick up a tempo on the queen with Nh7 right away?

I've noticed you're a fan of meeting F pawn pushes with a symmetrical push of your own.  You've done it in a couple games.  Maybe here it was okay. Not sure. (in reference to your 27th).

Your comment to move 34 is good. You do pick up a pawn. 34. ... Bd7 does the same trick but I'm not sure I like it as much.  Taking his bishop and giving him a protected passer was terrible though.  I bet you wouldn't have done that if your g6 pawn was defended by h7!

Okay... Final comments: Imho, the game fell apart with your move 23. ... h5.  White didn't blunder and it seems like you struggled to find a plan.

I think 23. ...Be6 with the idea of Nh5, Rf8, f5, Raf7, etc... it doesn't do that much damage but it's something.  Ideally if you can get f4 in you might be able to provoke g4... then your weird queen/bishop setup MIGHT contribute to a few tactics and his LSB will be permanently useless.

Umm... I guess that's about all I can think of right now.  Good game!

I agree. Particually with f4 pawn pushes, I have lost a few games doing that.
