...Good practice for improving your visualization skills...

That is the idea behind this forum; glad someone is making use of it. happy.png I learn through posting too, but it isn't the same kind of learning, since I know all of the solutions I post (since I found it) it makes it a challenge for me to fairly find the lines xD.

Spaceysmile

TBH black King on kingside screams with " mate me "

And  there is some Interesting variations .

1.Qh6+ Kf7 ( 1...Kg8 2.Qxg6! wins ) 2.Qxh7!! ( I considered 2.Ng5+? as well , but black can hold with 2...fxg5 3.Rf3+ and at there , both Kg8 and Ke8 collapses to Bxg6 , but black can hold with Nf6 or Bf6 ) Rxh7 3.Rxh7+ Ke8 ( other moves lose quickier to Rh8 and R1h7 mate .) 4. Bxg6 + Kf8 ( I think that is The variation Pawnstorm calculated,too)  5. Rh8+ Kg7 6.R1h7+ Kxg6 7. Nh4+! Kg5 8.Rg7+ Kf4 9.g3+#

TBH that seems much More easier Than pawn endgame .

Yes, the Black King certainly looks like it is in danger. I thought that this puzzle thematically resembled the 1st official puzzle with the King hunt situation, but I still decided to post this one too. I don't want every position I post to be a long King hunt scenario, but often times the lines are forcing enough to make good calculation training puzzles, and that is what we are after here happy.png  (I also have a few other puzzles in mind that are perhaps easier in nature, or not as long: I want many different levels of chess players to benefit from this forum. I'd rather lean towards too difficult rather than too easy though, as a beginner may still learn something from a complex position, but seldom will people learn from positions that are too easy). With that said, this forum will inevitably feature a few puzzles of similar nature to the first puzzle, but I'd also like to mix in a few other calculation-based situations too (like the positional puzzles I mixed in already).

Oh by the way, just curious: how long did your calculation take you @spaceysmile ? We prefer accuracy over time, but I was just curious to how long you spent on this position; I might have suspected a King hunt (as White has so many pieces aiming at the King - especially Black's weak h-file), but I probably would have taken several minutes just calculating out the variations grin.png

...Did I find the fastest mate?

I typically wait about a week before posting the puzzle solution, but I could private message you before then.

No need, I went ahead and watched some of the video (up until he won).

Then I wondered, if was the quickest mate?

I didn't take notes as I was trying to visualize everything only. I remember the 2 lines spacesmile has (up to move 4), but I also calculated a pawn check. With 2 rooks on h-file, I don't know why I switched to that.

I was trying to find a way similar to the other post, forcing the the king walk, but lost track of some pieces.

oh okay; yes that was the quickest mate in the video.

I think once you know the answer, visualizing all those moves can still be helpful.

I agree. I still do this (especially after forgetting the line xD), but it isn't exactly the same.

Spaceysmile

It took somewhere between 5 and 10 minutes . Mainly Because There isnt much Alternative subvariation which seems that forcing , and fast moves should always considered First due prevent black helping their kingside ( Nf8 , Maybe f5 for prevent bishop's way )

Did several recent posts get deleted?

Edit: When posted this, #200 was last post available to view.

I just looked back at some older posts and in hindsight, I think some earlier posts must have been deleted since I think some post numberings are now not the same order as some comments in previous annotations.

This happens a lot due to the high number of cheating and/or sockpuppet accounts that get closed.  The "Will computers ever solve chess?" thread has lost dozens if not hundreds of pages this way.

I found the solution after looking at all kinds of sacrifices on g6 and h7 . Black’s last move gave it away that those 2 squares are undefended .

It's been a while so here's a new position . White to move

I'll now post the "5th official puzzle" White to move.

This position I got from another forum here on chess.com (I responded to that forum a long time ago: I liked the position a lot back then. I wrote down the position and now I had to remember where I got it from as I didn't originally intend on reposting it, but it is a nice position), but I don't know if the "hidden text" will cover up hyperlinks to forums or member profiles. To be safe, I'll try to avoid links yet: but the forum title was "97% got this chess puzzle wrong Are you the 4%?"

Ok, never mind happy.png.  I guess Rg1 would be the line to dig into then...can you turn the mate threats into a winning advantage, etc.
