Chessmaster 10 + Windows 10 = FAIL!! What Now?

I have loved the Chessmaster 10 game since I got it in 2005.  There was endless stuff to explore. The openings guide, the select games database, the academy lessons and the Josh Waitzkin lessons and annotated games were excellent. Unfortunately, I can't figure out how to install the game to my new desktop computer without getting a 1628 error (Failed to Complete Installation). Is there a newer game that is compatible with Windows 10 that is is as watchable as Chessmaster. I play here a lot, so getting a chess program for actually playing games isn't really that important. A good engine for analysis and interesting annotated games are really what I'd like. I have an optical drive and Steam. Any suggestions?

Sure.  Yeah it's too bad Ubisoft let the Chessmaster franchise die.  There's a great free program called Lucas (or is it Lucas Chess).  A bit cumbersome for my taste, but lots of folks love that they can switch engines in and out and many other features.  Not sure about annotated games though.  There's Fritz, which being a Chessbase product, is not the easiest to use, but lots of folks swear by it.  Most famous for insulting your play in the annotations.  There's ChessKing which is a lot of fun and has a series of exercises including playing the program at full strength, but with piece odds.  Very decent database.  And my favorite is HIARCS which includes as one of it's databases a 1,000 game collection annotated by humans.  It's also known for a near human like playing experience in that the program makes random errors and doesn't always follow book.  Sweet search function that allows you to set up a position and all the games it has occurred in will pop up(for the loaded database).  A bit slow to load because it uses PGN files though.  Whew, let me catch my breath...

Or you can go the other way and get an engine like Stockfish and add a GUI to make it work (Graphical User Interface).  So that should give you a few choices.  Oh and a forum search will reveal dozens of previous threads with suggestions. Good luck!

Here you go.  Slightly different search terms could return different results...

Have you tried the suggestions for CM on Win10 at ubisoft forums?  I know this is months later, but wanted to provide a solution for others finding this thread from a search.
