Did I miss a Checkmate?

This is an online game a played recently. It was a bit mad. I managed to sac all of my minor pieces (not quite deliberately!) and bring the black King to a position where I was sure I could checkmate him. However, after much studying, and going over the position on the analysis board again and again, I just could not see a checkmate. I knew I could save the game with a draw by perpetual, ie:

30. Qf3+ Kh3

31. Qh1+ Kg4

32. Qf3+ Kh3

33. ½ - ½

And so it ended. But I’ve had the nagging feeling ever since that I missed a win. Is there a checkmate here?

Apologies, the diagram should say 'White to move'.

queen to f3

It would be interesting to see some moves before this position. As far as I can tell, your best choice here was perpetual check. If you had tried anything but check rightaway, the king would've run away via h5.... and the only possible check is Qf3+ and pawn f3 (which only pushes him to safety). The second move has the same problem. the king looks trapped, but you need several tempi to get a rook to checkmate and by then your queen will surely be threatened and the game is lost.

Nope, Qf3+ fails to Kh3, which ends in a draw by perpetual.

That was the problem I had. Nothing was quick enough, and his defensive resources, though far away, were decisive in preventing victory.

in this position:

f3+ Kxg3

Qh2#

am i right?

forget what i said , black can go Kh5 .... but i am almost sure that there is a mate.

I'm afraid not dpakoh. After f3+ the King can escape via h5.

I don't have one at the moment, I'm still deciding which to go for (after asking for advice in the forums, I'm going for chessmaster).

LastQueenofIreland

There is a checkmate.  Qf3#     Kh3    then play G4##

LastQueenofIreland

actually no sorry thats not

i am thinking of :

Qf3+ Kh3

Kf1 (with the idea white K to go to e2 and checkmate with Rh1)

but i am still pondering on black's reply

I looked at that, but I don't think there's time. Black could reply with Rf6.

davidetal

Painfully close, but perpetual was the right decision.

goldknight3000

still the best option is the draw.

Mazera

It seems like it.

I'm thinking of

Qf3+ Kh3

Rd3! and now Black has virtually no moves. White can simply play Kh1, Rg1, Rg2 and Rh2#.

OR if he tries to exchange queens,

... Qf6

Qe2 (threating f3 and mate) Qg6 (preventing f3)

f4! and White wins. (the threat is g4+)

Edit: I looked at Rf6 and you will still get your mate. Black can only prolong it.)

30. Qf3+ Kh3

31. Qh1+ Kg4

32. Qf3+ Kh3

33. ½ - ½       What about 33- g4+...?  With a discovered check on Black

arunchess

Well why sacrificed on faith without calculating ! If there is a mate it could be only sacrifising further after forcing king to h3. May be g or h pawn but rook is hanging too. Lines must be opened but opponent can use them as well so seems very risky.

Apologies. The white king wasn't showing :P
