Karjakin has been banned from top level events because of his endorsement of Putin. And Ding did not having make it to the candidates through the World Cup, Grand Prix, or Grand Swiss in part because of passport issues. Why hasn’t ding gotten Katharine candidates spot?

He needs to play 30 games in the required 12 month period AND be the highest rated player that hasn't received entry already. So he needs to play 26 games before May 31 to qualify.

I've read that Ding Liren will reach the 30 games on April 28th, so he'll have about 6 weeks to prepare for candidates, relax/rest, etc. This is assuming he doesn't drop 20 rating points by then.
