Do you use "Analysis" for turn based Onlien Play?

Games that allow multiple days for movements, do you analyze them using the analysis mode that can be found on the same page as you make your move or on a real chess board during the game?  Do you wait till after the game is over?

Is it ethical since it's offered to both players?  How do you feel about analyzing ongoing games?

Before I realized what the 'Analyze' link does, I did this on a board. It was a real pain in the ass setting and re-setting the board. I use it nearly every move.

Online Chess is meant to be like correspondance chess. Which, I believe, is mostly meant for studying. So, in this case, it is a great option. I find it has given me more confidence when I have to analyze in my head during live games.

As for ethical; I don't see an issue. I assume it is allowed, just like looking up opening lines, partly because it can't be prevented.

I think a lot of people don't use it. I see opponents make moves that seem like they spent about 2 seconds thinking about it. I can spend up to 30 minutes analyzing canidate moves.

The analysis board is not computer or external analysis.  It just lets you physically move pieces yourself.   Which is exactly what players do in their minds....  if they can .... so at the most it removes any advantages of a player that can visualize the board in their mind.

I do, if its a complicated position.

I even been known to use a board and pieces.

Opening databases are legal as well. What is not legal are chess engines, and endgame tablebases.

No I do not and here is why:

Its a bad crutch that promotes a lack of visualization.  Being able to move the pieces on the board without seeing them except in one's mind is probably the single most important skill in chess and the analysis board removes that factor and stultifies any growth in this area.

As such, its a legal form of cheating oneself from developing the skill needed to get better atthe game.

The main points of Online Chess do not include visualization. There are other very importat things that are learnt. Things such as learning feasable canidate moves as well as building confidence in your own decision making.

Visualization is totally useless if you are unable to learn to make plans and choose valid canidate moves.

Visualization can be practiced during timed games when these other items have already been practiced and developed.

Yes. I've noticed before that higher rated players often communicate this way. Must be that aggressiveness that got them so far in chess shinning through in such intelligent dialog.

When I was younger I could be seen shinning up trees, but I can't recall ever shinning up any dialog. Interesting concept, though.

That's funn. You took my misspelling and gave it a definition that does not exist.Laughing

Take it outside gentlemen.

I use the analysis board and no-one, I think, considers it a cheat. It certainly makes analysis easier by removing the need to visualise. I am poor at visualisation and attribute to the analysis board the fact that my rating here is 50 points or so higher than it was during the thirty or forty years that I played occasional otb matches.

tavoool

quien quiera jugar sin analizar, estoy disponible a 7 dias.

SocialPanda

I think it's a crutch and might leave one unprepared for OTB play, althought I am trying to wean myself from it, I do still use it in a pinch.
