It is best to look 10 moves ahead when you are battling a worthy opponent.

What if it is mate in 7?  Is the next "move" you are thinking about what you are going to say after the game and responses if he responds negatively or in a friendly manner?

Look 10 moves ahead, that's incredible.  Give us an example.  Post one of your games and give us your analysis for the next ten moves including variations.

...force the pawns back? Nice.

If I manage to see 3 moves ahead it can be said that I have had a good day.

If I can force my opponents pawns back, it can be said that a local earthquake is taking place.

yes its bad to develop the pawns too early because the opponent might gain time while kicking them back. This is why I prefer to play black. I always look about 3,000 moves ahead but my opponent always deviates by making an inferior move and beats me.

Only 3,000? I look 10,000 moves ahead but my opponent always beats me at move 5.

What some people said that if you look 10 moves ahead it is already incredible. But 3000 and 10000 are almost impossible!!!

I love the fact that this is posted under 'game analysis'

It is not usually neccessary to look ten moves ahead.

If you could see 10 moves ahead, your live ratings would not be: 896 in standard, 769 in blitz, and 861 in bullet.

In this game, you were checkmated in 13 moves. That wouldn't have happened if you could see 10 moves ahead. In fact, you overlooked one move threats.

What's important is not calculating ten moves deep, just a few moves ahead: but don't miss a good response by your opponent ;) Tactics trainer is a good way to improve your calculation.

the question is not about how many moves you can see but WHICH moves you are looking at. i once saw 8 moves into a sicilian. when i got there i lost in another 10 moves

It is all about looking at the patterns and ideas you see and then you start calculating. Above example from tigergutt: The g-pawn looks dangerous, but it seems not to go anywhere from the moment(Nf6 is not possible), i see the Queen is pinned and i also see the black Queen doesn't have many squares anymore(White want's to play f4)... Now you start calculcating to make these/one idea work. So you think i need to remove my Queen or make room for it, but it is not possible because Bc5 is hanging so you start thinking about Be7 to make room for your Queen.... I do some quick calculation and play Be7, it is really that simple.
