You were good, even winning, up until 52. Kf5. Knights are funny when it comes to stopping passed pawns. Sometimes they're the best, sometimes they're the worst. It all depends on how close they are. In your game, the knight on c6 was too far to stop the pawn if you had pushed 52. f7. By wasting time with Kf5, you let the knight make the move it needed to catch up, an opportunity the black player took advantage of with 52. ... Nd8. At that point, they could easily hold a draw because their knight controlled the square in front of your pawn. About the only chance you might have had would be if you could attack the knight with your king, but your opponent made sure not to allow that by moving their king up to protect the knight before your king could get there.
Help needed
Ah, good point. I didn't see that. In that case, perhaps a timely a7 to deflect the knight would have been better, but I'm not sure when. Looking a bit closer, perhaps 46. Nxg3+ was the move. Yeah, you got rid of their pawns with it and ended their winning chances, but with their knight covering one pawn and their king covering the other, it looks kind of drawish from there. Just keep their king on the f file and shuffle the knight between a7 and c6 if they need a tempo and they can hold the game.
I think at move 26 you shouldn't have played a3 but instead you should have started to march your king towards the centre of the board and maybe find a good place for your knight to go - your knight was at the rim of the board, whereas the black knight was in the centre of the board. Nc3 might have been a good idea, to stop the a pawn advancing [if a6, then Nxa6.] for now.
Also the knight would have protected your own 'a' pawn, making it difficult for black to make any attacks on your queenside pawns for a little while.
I think 51.a7 would have made things easier for you. Not sure. I'm going to run the game through a powerful chess engine [Houdini 1.5. on ipon it has a rating higher than deep rybka 4!] and see what it comes up with. I'll let you know when it's done.
36.g4 was an error. that's when things start to get very drawish [the computer says it's 0.04 advantage to white.. basically a draw.] for the rest of the game.
The key idea was to advance the h pawn. You could have done this at 2 different times. 34. h4 and 36. h4.
After you missed those moves, it was just a draw.
So basically you can crush black by using zugzwang a lot. Black cannot deal with so many threats at once, that's the main thing you needed to take advantage of.
Hi,
Can anyone please tell me which move I did wrong, which ruined my chances of winning this game.Other than the cancellation of rooks.
