Dear Friends,
First off, I apologize. I did not know whether to post this in the Help & Support or the Game Analysis Forum. Please feel free to move or delete as appropriate.
I have played chess before and know most rules, but don't have any practice. Every time I play with a human (my local society club), I lost every time (unless it's some children I am playing with) because i have no practice (wife does not know, and is not interested to learn how to play chess). So on the recommendation of a few friends, I brought a chess program (Shredder 12 and Chessbase GUI) to practice playing Chess and upgrade my strategy and tactics.
One of the features touted for these programs is not only the unlimited practice as if you are playing with a human being, but also the engine will ANALYSE your game after you finish. It was great to be able to spend so many hours playing on the computer as if you were playing with a human being! (And wife was happy I was out of her way instead of pottering around in the house!!)
Now, after playing a few games and getting used to this feeling and my shiny GUI and engine (and unfortunately losing everyone of them, even on the 700 ELO), I decided to take it seriously and start analysing my games. After I finished a game, therefore, which of course I lost (I was using black), I decided to ANALYZE GAME. In the moves list, the analysis finished and showed me some numbers +/-, some points as well as some moves. When I click on those gray colored moves sometimes, the board changes to a move I did not play.
I realised I was totally out of my depth in understanding what an analysis means. I read the manual but could not still understand the same. I am very familiar with notations and have no problems interpreting them. Therefore, could some of you friends point me to a website, or provide an explanation of what is actually happening during this analysis (it seems to start from reverse!) and how to interpret the moves (with the +/- signs, the numbers, the new moves etc.) I saw a lot of tutorials (paid and free) that explain strategy, tactics, endgames, middles, beginnings, etc. But almost no one exlplains in detail how to interpret the game analysis result. Also I could not see a way to USE those analysis results to better my game. I hear people saying on forums that analysis helped me make my games better. HOW? I could not figure what to take away from the game analysis.
I have a desire to play and win in my local society club consisting of seniors (who are also occasional players like me) and also with teenagers who have played for over 2-3 years now. I have no intentions of becoming a grandmaster or something like that (I am already 42 years old). So I would like to reach out to you and request help please.
If there is a minimum ELO rating that I need to post on this board I am sorry but I am just a newbie in chess game analysis. Can someone please guide me on this one? Bless you all!
