I hate myself

Today, I played 2 games with 15min +10s increments and I think I was not really focussed or not into it but that is not an excuse especially for the second one. I lost the first one because of an early blunder and several other blunders in the endgame. For the second one, I am speechless..

Permission granted. As long as it's in a padded cell.Smile

Mmh I don't know where is the closest one and it might actually sound weird when I would go to the warden: 'I would like to enter your psychiatric clinic to bang my head against a padded cell's wall so that I don't crak it opened.'

They would surely let me in but would like to keep me for a moment or two. I am going to use my mattress, thanks for the tip!

Take a look at moves 38, 44 and 56. There you can start learning end games.

I'm trying to learn something here. Looks to me that the black rook is incapable to protect the pawn because white is marching his pawn down. So I will think twice before putting my rook in the same pile to defend my pawn. And if this is not enough what would be the correct move? Then I thought that 38..Rb8 would be a good move.Or not?

varelse1

56.Rd2+ would have won for black.

And yes, 38...Rb8 was important, as well. Rooks are the DH's of chess. (Baseball reference) They love to attack, but hate to defend.

Mr. Gottlieb, it occurred to me that your name in Russian would be Bogoljubov.

expert advise: dont do that again because it was terrible

Considering how you first started off this game, you should feel blessed that you even got to the point of having a winning position at all. Though to be fair, 15 minutes isn't a whole lot of time even with the 10 second increment (adds 7 extra minutes after 42 moves).

2...Nf6?! already was a mistake in my view, unless you understood that you were basically transposing into a sort of Alekhine Defense when you played it. The point of playing ...e6 is to prepare ...d5, so playing ...e6 then ...Nf6 seems inconsistent at best.

5...Nc6? was of course a blunder, but since you thought the b6 knight had c4 available, it's understandable (if still not really excusable) in that light. 5...a5 instead.

Aside from that, your endgame was cleraly inferior to your opponent's here. 38...e5? was a mistake, for example, and you should have played 38...Rb8 instead, since the trade of pawns would have worked to your benefit. Maybe you were in time trouble or something at this point?

47...Ke5 I believe was also a step in the wrong direction. I would have started pushing your pawns on the king side instead. Remember that the usual goal in any endgame is to create passed pawns, because passed pawns tend to tie down your opponent. What good is having extra pawns in an endgame if you aren't going to use them?
Hence, ...g5; Ra2,h5; Ra6+,Ke5; Rh6,h5 instead, as one possible continuation.

looks like a game i would play...

(that is not very good)

Thanks for your advice everyone! I am going to study this game (especially the endgame) and refer to them. But tomorrow, enough bad play for today...

If you're really serious about beefing up your endgame, I recommend "Silman's Complete Endgame Course." Lots of material for players of any level.

Your game could have come straight out of that book, as a matter of fact.

Rook endgames are very difficult. A good thing to remember for these types of positions, "Don't make a move based on if the position is still winning, make a move based on if the move improves your position!". I think I read this from a Dvoretsky of Aagard... I'm not sure which. :P

because thats definatly the best way to get better...

Someone who isn't me told me it's better to bang your head against the vending machine.

You still get the same effects as the wall, but if you get lucky, you may actually get a free soda out of the experience too. Wink
