Here is the game along with my thoughts.

What level are you? I don't analyze games if the players are above my rating.

CaChessToffee

I'm up to a 1463 after winning this game.

ZeroSymbolic7188

Yeah, I'm not good enough to say anything about it lol.

CaChessToffee

I would like your feedback regardless.

Might help you as much as it helps me and it generates discussion.

White's 6. Nb5 was bad, and 9. Qd5 just loses a piece. Not much to say about Black's moves since White was already lost after 10 moves.

5..Qf6 is a good move in that position.

6..Bxe3 is the only move. 6.Nb5 threatens Nxc7+ and Nxa8. 6..Bxe3 threatens checkmate and does not give White time to carry out his threat. If there was no mate threat White would not be forced to recapture and might be able to play Nxc7+ instead of fxe3.

After 13.Bd3 a good plan is to continue development. Maybe something like d6 and Bd7, getting your bishop out with an attack on the knight, followed by Re8 to improve your rook and put pressure on White's isolated pawns.

After 13..Nxd3+ 14.cxd3 there's b6 and Ba6 with pressure on the knight and d3 pawn.

19..c6 20.Nd6 Kc7 is fine. You're a piece up and this stops White's threats.

After 6. Nb5, I wouldn't have captured the bishop for the fear of 7. Nxc7. It forks the king and the rook. I will lose the rook and the option of castling. Yes, you can capture that knight later and be up a piece. (A bishop and a Knight for a rook) but the opposite queen still on the board, the option of King in the middle can be dangerous.

Don't fear 7.Nxc7+. If he wants your rook let him have it.

Ah! I missed that one. It's checkmate.

This is excactly what I was looking for, thank you.

Yeah, I did realise that Bxe3 needed to happen during game time but I forget some of these things when I post the games because I play correspondence chess and it can be weeks between the move and when I post the game. I will start keeping more in-depth game notes during the game in case I share it afterwards.

The developing moves d6 and Bd7 make sense now, during the game after I have been attacking/exhanging pieces I think I feel the need to stay on the attack and moves like those just feel too passive for me. I definitely need to learn how to change gears during a game and realise once I start an attack I don't need to be relentless with it until the end. I still have to develop.

I completely missed b6 and Ba6 as well, those would have been nice moves and would have solved my problem of the advanced Knight. Well spotted!

Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated.

Was that a blitz game?

I'd play 14...d6 instead of d5. If d6 he can never push e5 and his double pawns are stuck. Since you still have a light squared bishop it is generally good to put own pawns on dark squares as they will not hinder your bishop and control the opposite color. Now, "generally" does not mean always, but I think here it applies here as well.

After ...d5 he should not have traded pawns exd in my opinion but push, putting his pawn on the color where your bishop can never attack it and forcing your knight to go elsewhere. After Ng4 I think Kd2 is OK since the center is closed. I think Black then cannot make progress just as easily as in the game.
