Looking for help with midgame planning

I am a beginner player.

I often find myself in this position (or simillar).

I am black.

I have started reading some introductory chess books, which say you should allways have a plan.

As the book suggests, I start to analyse this position for imbalances.

I see that as black I have a lead in minor piece development.

Bu now I am at a loss as to what I should do.

Eventually, I made a random move (not bad, but no plan). Which exactly what my book says you shouldn't do: You should allways have a plan.

And... I lost (no particular blunder, just got cornered by the superior player)

So what would be a good plan here?

You haven't completed your development. You are uncastled. Your rooks aren't connected. White's last move seems like it can be used to predict that he plans to put the knight on e3 eventually, although that involves moving the rook and a knight tour to f1 and e3. It seems like a very slowly developing game with time to prepare on both sides. To me, it seems like after castling, connecting the rooks, etc., I might want to challenge control of d5. That would require preparatory work and protection of e5 pawn.

Thinking that, I checked the Explorer database and what do you know? Both master games showed black castling here. If I were you, I would review both of those games to see how they developed.
