Making A Comeback! Analysis #1!

In order to improve my emotional fitness and finally make legitimate attempts to improve my analyzing skills, I will be posting one analysis here after every session. I will post the first game of every session so that all results, wins/losses/draws, can be analyzed.

Tonight's game felt very solid. I don't like playing against the Scandi. I have very few ideas against it, so that will be my study for tomorrow morning. Natural development and maybe check out some master games to see if I can glean any ideas from them. Of course, your input is welcome as well. Feel free to critique, ask questions-- whatever! I need to learn. I want to improve and get back in form. I tilted all the way from 1600 to where I am now. Needless to say I feel like trash about it. But i'm trying to not make playing chess about gaining "ELO" and make it about gaining "ELO". I know, sounds funny right? But I decided to create an acronym with the word ELO to remind me that every win, loss, draw-- EVERY result is an Essential Learning Opportunity.
With that in mind I give you the first in what I hope to be a long and productive series of posts that help me improve my analyzing ability, my overall play, and most importantly my ability to enjoy the game again, even in adverse situations.
Thank you again and I hope you enjoy this analysis.

I hate playing against the Scandi too. Recently I try using the Von Popiel gambit against it. Always good fun.

It is normally a d4 gambit, but you can play it after e4/d5 and as your 2nd move, play d4. Very fun gambit, even if you lose, and you can be guaranteed that black wont expect it

Thanks @ChrisZifo. I'm definitely going to look into that. I need to add some weapons against the scandi, so I thank you for that link! Overall I was happy with how I played this game. Always good to play a 20+ move game with 93% accuracy. Tryin to build myself back up stronger than before.

I hated the Scandi before I took up this gambit. I just dont like the pawn structure and have no idea what to do (even though it is supposed to favour white). Another problem with the scandi is that they (black) can play the modern Scandi, which has two evil Gambits- the Icelandic and the Portuguese gambit.

Von Popiel gambit, played just a couple of hours ago. Making a comeback on Blitz, after sinking from 1900-1700

Have you tried playing the g3 line?

The 4.g3 line is the way I love to destroy Scandy!

If they play Qa5 + Develop bishop outside of pawn chain, you can play the wild b4 move against them.

————————

If they play Qd8 line, you can still play b4 line, but it’s better to play in center with d4.

————————

Basically, you play 4.g3.

Than wait to see where Queen and Bishop goes. Than you start trying to hit Queen with pawns B or D pawn.

I have not played that before. Definitely looking at it before work! Thank you for that. That definitely sounds interesting and is not something I've seen yet. Everyone seems to develop against the scandi in much the same way. That 4. g3 is something I'm not sure I've ever seen. But now I'm wanna look into it. Thanks, friend.

Creating a forum thread every day for a game sounds too extreme. Creating a thread takes time and effort and typing out your thought-process can be draining as well. I'd post less frequently than each day. Quality over quantity. I won't put a time frame on it, but something like once a week is more realistic on yourself. It is more important you post games which you didn't understand something, or where you aren't sure why you lost and where you went wrong.

With that being said, here is your game with my added thoughts to it happy.png

Just to add the problem with 13.h3 in general is that it allows Black to play his freeing break …c5, (possibly with an exchange in e4 first) and if he ever gets that …c5 move in without anything bad happening then you can’t claim any advantage at all (if anything black’s side is probably easier to play objectively)

So something like 13.Bxf6 Nxf6 14.Nc5 to keep the lid on that is called for - him taking on c5 would be very depressing for black with his B on b7 buried or going a2-a4 at some earlier point in the game is always going to make his …c5 break a bit more difficult

I would say on the whole a fairly decent game but quite a lot of ‘general’ moves that weren’t necessarily bad but didn’t get to the heart of the position and also opponent didn’t do much to try to set problems - not that that’s your fault of course.
