Depends on the opening mate. Each opening offers different  follow up ideas so u have to show us what your talking about more, ie a game or something u have played or plan to play. Otherwise all i can say is to look for possible or imediate weaknesses in there position u can exploit and also find ways to improve your pieces control and positon over the game but thats just general advice.....Cool

Read some chess books, I did it when I was first starting out, and it helped me alot.  I recommend Chess for Idiots, and any Jeremy Silman book for  beginners.

As chess is a stragedy game, you must have an idea what you want to do in the middle game. You must know what your opponent is trying to do and You must balance the two. Tempo, position and material all blend together.

Buy a game collection of the older games going back to Morphy / Anderssen / Capablanca up through recent times. Through the web you can find gently used copies very cheap (Amazon, Ebay). Play through the games, try to see what they are doing, make notes. If a game doesn't make sense, ask someone here.

Play games against players better than you. Ask them to tell you where you went wrong. Most players are willing to help teach.

Try going to www.chesstactics.org; Silman was mentioned, so perhaps see www.jeremysilman.com/chess.html.  You don't have to spend anything (just time).
