If you annotate a pgn you can have notes corresponding to particular moves, but your analysis notes during a game are just kept together like on a virtual notepad not linked to any moves.
Private notes vs. analysis board

annotate a pgn
Will I find something in the FAQ's that explains how to do that?
Do I have to download the PGN or can I do it here on chess.com?

Click the chessboard in your reply window. Follow the directions.
To make a game into a diagram, download your game in pgn format, open the file in notepad, and paste it into the pgn textbox in the diagram. You can then play through it and add annotations.

Thanks for your reply but I'm afraid I'm still a bit lost.
I downloaded the pgn file, opened it in notepad, I'm trying to figure out what this means:
''Click the chessboard in your reply window" ... where is the reply window? Are you talking about the forum Post Your Reply window (probably not because I just want it for my own use) and I don't know where to find "the pgn textbox in the diagram". It's probably obvious to the most casual observer

Doc,
go as if to reply to this post, and you will find a little chessboard, below and to the right of your avatar. That's what you want, click it! a little frustrating in operation to start, but persistence is rewarded.
Hope this helps.
I see people encouraging the use of "analysis" notes ... I assume that to mean "private notes" as you're playing a game. When I look at games in the forum I see notes in the move list. I thought the two might be related but when I look at my analysis board after a game I don't see my notes. I have to keep clicking on the Notes tab and any notes I've entered are all "together" - that is not associated with particular moves.
I wonder if I'm doing something wrong ... when you say "analysis notes" ... do you actually type them into the move list, or is there an even better way to do it?
