39 Qd1?! (39 Qe2 Qe4?! 40 f3 with Kf2)

38 c3 looks unnecessary. Knight holds c2. c2 holds d3 f2 holds knight. black is going nowhere.

38 Ng2! exchanges rooks with a tempo, followed by Qe3 taking control.

ya i definitely should have played Ng2, and at the end he doesn't have perpetual.

curious, his blunder threw you off your stride. if, after a blunder, you get up, walk around. sit back down and totally reevaluate it becomes obvious the plan to swap off and simplify. during a game if the game changes so must the plans. i guess.. still the pressure on his backward pawn was a very good plan and it worked.
