I ran a game through the Chess.com engine as well as the lichess engine and both told me for 6 turns that I made a mistake not going e4.
I feel that I had no clear long term advantage to breaking up my pawn structure and what I felt was a pretty solid defense, opening the game up and giving black more space to move and more options.
Was moving that pawn so strong a move that I need to adjust my play style and strategy to deal with the consequences, or could I have been right to develop my bishop and rook first before opening up the board by offering pawn and knight swaps?
My game was far from perfect, though it resulted in a comfortable win. I missed a free bishop and on this move I feel I should have moved re1 instead of bb5. As far as e4 goes, however, I still feel that would have been the wrong move for me.
How wrong am I? Do I need to take repeated bludgeoning by chess engines over moves like this as a sign that I need to say "I am wrong here and making these moves is just objectively better?"
