some help with my game against GM

You had made a couple of blunders , but still I think you played OK , and the fact that you lasted for 30 moves is a good thing . :)

Hello ben07;
Looking at the board again, I now assume that you were using the black pieces. You made a blunder in that you did NOT take his rook when you had the opportunity. If I was in your place, I would never have moved my queen, but instead, taken his rook...IMMEDIATELY!!!
It takes only ONE mistake in chess, to CASCADE into a series of OTHER mistakes, because obviously, you are that much WEAKENED in strength or positional advantage.

4...Bc5?! - Trying to defend your extra d4-pawn puts your pieces in rather akward positions. I think better tries are 4...Nf6, conceding that White can have his extra pawn back but you are't giving him any free tempi, or 4...Bb4 4.c3 dxc3 5.bxc3 Ba5 where you consolidate the extra pawn and create a target on c3, but of course White has an extra tempo and more central control in compensation. I'm sure 4...Bc5 is playable but it looks weaker then other options that were available.
6...Ne4? - You didn't calculcate 1 move ahead and trapped your knight. After 7.Re1 where does it go? f6, d6, g3, c3, g5, c5, f2, and d2 are all defended. So 7...Nxf2 Kxf2 and you're down a piece for two pawns. 7.Bd5, played by your opponent, is an interesting idea.
8...Nb4? - 8...Nxd2 Bxd2 would have saved your f-pawn.
12.Nxd4!? - A very clever move! Your opponent senses tactical weakness and sets you up for a trap. I try to do this too, but not so elegantly.
13...Nxc2?? - 13...Nc6 was much better, seeing through the trap and bringing a defender to your king's aid with a gain of time. You have to be extra careful when a strong player--in this case a GM--seems to hang material.
At this point you are completely lost.
So what do you need to do to play better? You already seem to know that in the opening you develop pieces and control the center. I think maybe you should work on two things:
(1) Before playing a move, always consider your opponent's best move. In some cases you seem to do that, in other cases you don't. If you don't do that every move, you are playing hope chess and will usually lose to somebody who plays real chess every move. http://www.chesscafe.com/text/heisman10.pdf
(2) Study basic tactics. There are many sources for them, but some of the best are Heismans' Back to Basics: Tactics, Seirawan's Winning Chess Tactics, or How to Beat Your Dad At Chess, Convekta's Basic Chess Tactics, or Polgar's 5334 Combinations. These will all help you to see more and look deeper at a position.
Good luck!
Thanks a lot for your comments likesforests, the helps a lot and thank you for that link to a very interesting article. I think I agree with your 2 abservations . I think I tend to focus too much on my own plan and someimes miss a fairly simple reply along the way . I think i try to look too much for an attacking combination when there may not be one on the board . If you don't mind I can show you another game , where I seemed to have a superficial attack which fizzled away . Maybe I try to play too aggressively ? I added some comments as well of what I was thinking at the time.

The first big mistake was, of course 6..Ne4? The normal move here is 6..d5 7Bb5 (7ef dc with sharp game, black have good chances) 7..Ne4. After your move you certainly lose all chances to stand against Boris Alterman (as he is a well-known grandmaster and the the rest was only technics)

I think that was a good game , although white made some shockers like the last move and 13. f3 ?? but you too had a couple
11.. h3 is a definitely not good , white is winning after 12. Bxf7+
21. Qh6 !? is very nice and also 24 .. Bg5 !

Comments on the second game you posted:
3. ... Nf6. Did you consider your opponent might play 4. e5 attacking the knight?
"7. ... Bg4 Maybe Be6, opening the f-file but I get doubled pawns." The weakest square in your camp is d5. The doubled pawn that you imagine to be a weakness would actually remove this weakness from your position.
"9. ... h5 I have to open up a file quickly if I want to attack." I'm not sure what about your position makes you want to attack the king. Your king is still in the center, and I don't see any of your pieces getting to weak points around the opponent's king.
21. Nf4?? Your computer says this is a blunder, but you disagree. Did you try to figure out why your computer says it's a blunder? For example, what would the computer play for black in response?

The things I was seeing in the opening was not fighting the power of the opponents pieces. What I mean is that the bishop c4 is very strong if uncontested, either by clogging up his diagonal with a d5 push, or trying to combat him with pieces. The move bc5 might be replaced with d6,which is slightly slower, but works towards taking some energy out of whites centre with be6. Nf6 may be better replaced with nce7 even, then d5 push. Nf6 lets white proceed with his plan 'with tempo', meaning that your moves are all in responce to his, so he doesn't have to concern himself with reacting to threats, he just proceeds on with his plan. I am VERY surprised that a GM missed what I consider decisive 8. exf6 e.p. A GM is WAY better than me of course, but as far as I can see, that pawn capture gives white an irresistable attack. Thank you for sharing your game with us and congrats on lasting so long against a GM! Fun.

He didn't miss 8.exf6 e.p., he found a stronger move. Rybka, depth 19 evaluates 8.exf6 as +0.45 and 8.Nbd2 as +0.99. As you say, GMs are WAY better than you or I. ;)

I figured with all those positional plusses that the pawn capture would be best. Dang those computers......keep your eyes on them, they'll band with the GM's and turn on us any day now!!
are you crazy or just realy dumb
Hi everyone , new to the forums here . Maybe someone can help me with my game :) I played this game online against GM Boris Alterman . I lost obviously :D
I know I made some silly mistakes . But maybe someone can comment on which specific areas I need to look at improving . Thanks a lot :)
