Two Games - Comments?

Comments and such would be incredibly useful for my continued growth. Please attempt to pay attention to my positional play. That is still my weakest area imo.

Remellion

Let me see...

Here. I'll comment on the other if I feel energetic enough later...

In the first game after d4 d5, c4 Nf6, cxd5 is the best move. If black recaptures with knight, play d5 gaining a tempo on the knight and strengthening your center. If he recaptures with the queen, play Nc3, naturally developing and gaining a tempo on the queen.  Basically, his 2. Nf3 was an inaccuracy, and when you left it unpunished, you allowed him to transpose into the Queen's Gambit Declined Main Line (which later transposed into a semi-slav).  I'll look at the rest later, but take the stuff that isn't theory with a grain of salt because you and I are of pretty equal level :p

Remellion

And the other one.

There.

Phylar

The paaain! Constructive criticism is never fun. But it is necessary!

Remellion, your comments hurt the most, perhaps because my game is right there. However, I see where you are coming from and without a doubt you are correct. I made some serious mistakes and did not capitalize on positions where I should have had the advantage. I also missed some key tactical threats (those passed pawns were a doozy). I shall have to keep the games above with your annotations and variations in my library persay, they will be good to look back on.

Bonesy, in all fairness that b5 push was more of an experiment than anything lol. I am a bit crazy in that even against stronger opponents I enjoy experimenting with positions. However, you are more than correct, that was NOT the dr...move I was looking for.

11. Ba5, it was premature. Development was lacking behind and I should have pushed for 0-0.

So, it looks like my tactical sense still allows me to stay in a game, but the basics are lacking. Need to improve on positional understanding, pawn theory, and frankly stop trying to move so fast. Keep the comments coming! It may be a small stab everytime a comment rips apart a move I thought was good, but if I don't hear it I may never know. I'd rather take the bad to get better than the bad to stay worse.

Yeah, I agree that your tactics are ahead of your positional play, but that isn't bad.  I think tactics are the most important.  You'll find later though that the better players will take advantage of the weaknesses you create.  Unfortunately in chess, the weaknesses are often not repairable.

My goal is to reach GM status eventually. I will fill those holes with stronger tactical advances if I must. ................just gotta stop confusing myself with my own ideas lol

Remellion

It hurts to post games with your thoughts and watch them get ripped, but it's the way to improve. I'll tend to comment on such games because it's easier to give feedback and suggest things that won't be too complicated to understand. And I try not to be too scathing. :-P

I agree too, your tactics are much better than that 1400 guy. He missed so many shots, and overlooked a few of your threats too. The main issues you have now is developing your pieces a little faster and not weakening your pawns.

Realistic goals would be much better for you. 1500, then 1800, then 2000, 2200, etc. There a young man in our chess club your age that just hit 2000 USCF and it took him 5 years. Most never make 2000, never mind master. If you make master, and have the talent, then its usually another 5 years of nothing but chess 40-50 hours a week to get to a GM level. We have several IM's in our club and I have had some in-depth conversations with them and they all say pretty much the same thing.

GM is just long-term, however long that may be. My current goal is to break and hold the 1300 and push for 14. I will make 2000 and master. There is absolutely no way I will give that dream up, I have had it since I first learned how to play at around age 6 but didn't take things more seriously until High School when I really sat down with the books. However, I know that after a certain point, progression becomes slower. I just refuse to believe I've reached that point already.

@Remellion

It does hurt! But I am willing to deal with scathing reviews with the hopes that one day I will be good enough to see these issues before I receive the critique! As for my tactics, I blame my ability to perceive tactical threats on Yeres and you other puzzle posters, but primarily always facing stronger players than myself (which I still do lol). However, tactics alone won't make me the player I want to be and I often find myself going for a tactical advantage and lagging behind on development.

Rem, I thoroughly enjoyed your comments on my games. Same with everybody else (yours was just the easiest to follow because I didn't have to keep scrolling up or looking back and forth). I'll post more games as I play them.

Giving up dreams is what life is all about...especially the dreams we had when we were six years old...

Then you, sir, are not living. I had a dream of getting a college education even though my family was terribly poor, I am now in college. But since giving up dreams is part of life, I won't bother with a family, I'll quit school, and screw it, might as well give up living.

That would be "Miss", not "Sir";) But it's hard to give up living, it takes real dedication. Giving up family is even more difficult, since they know where you live and have your phone number. So let's start with giving up the little dreams first. After a while you can give up on all the adult dreams you have.

It's nice that you don't take yourself too seriously, and you have a good sense of humour. Those are attractive qualities to have. I mean, you don't want to sound like a Hallmark card while reaching for your dreams;)

I'm not jaded.

The only attraction I am looking for is the magnetic quality to produce my opponent's King into my clutches. Anyway, I'd happily be a Hallmark; no reason not to wear a crown when reaching for the top!

trysts

If you keep sounding like a Hallmark card, then it will be lonely at the top.

My apologies, Madame.

That's okay. But you should know that it is not easy being an alcoholic in this lovely, wonderful, chocolate factory of a world. It's hard to convince yourself that another drink will be just an escape;)

Your biggest problem is that you're playing time controls which are far too fast. It will only teach you bad habits.

I regulary run out of time. I use a LOT of it just to think. Plus I go over the games afterwards; I can learn from playing, but I can also learn from going over my games. I'll be moving up time controls when I feel it is time.

Oh and Trysts, it is always lonely at the top o.o
