1. e4 e5 is a perfectly good way to start for both black and white.

No ew. d4 as white and c6 as black.

You may prefer to start d4 or to play c6. But I don't think you can say that e4 is not a reasonable way to start the game. Unless you have taken some sort of drug.

In the Game Explorer on chess.com about 800,000 games start as e4 (whereas only about 600,000 start as d4). In response to e4 I personally prefer e6 to e5 (and probably I prefer c6 to e5) but e5 is a perfectly reasonable way to start.
