We need more amateurs to post their annotated games.

A 6|0 game. Not very good, but easy. There were some blunders though.

A interesting handling of a Nimzo-Indian Defense. Sometimes you can really win without a Queen, sometimes not.

The Bd5+ was overlooked though that would have won a lot faster as well sine Qd5+ follwos and he Rook hangs. Good pick BG

batgirl

Yeah, Bd5 not Bd4.  :-D

Hi.

I've been on the lookout on this thread for quite some time and I find alot of instructional stuff on the games that are posted. So I decided to give it a try. Before getting my game engine-checked, I'd like to hear some feedback from you guys on the Middlegame and Endgame (especially on the part where I thought it was a drawn position)

Here is a good example of properly executing a King hunt. 3dy/move.

Everyone should title their games with their rating. The problem with studying master games is the concepts involved are just too advanced for lower rated players. Sometimes getting the perfect move is not necessary; knowing a better move than the one you were considering is better.

Most people on here either lightly annotate their games, or they ask others to do all the annotating. I learn plenty from hearing the input of a 1700 player on a 1200 player's game, but I'm sure a 1000 player would benefit far more from reading the 1200 player's self annotation.

If we all annotate our own games in detailed words before submitting them to others, and state our ratings, it will make this forum very valuable for everyone of all ratings.

If you study your own game, please post it here, even if you don't think you need our help. I think that talking about your strategy at each move is far more valuable to others than looking at 2500 level variation analysis.

Just a quick question on annotation. Is this something you do afterwards? In correspondence games I sometimes make notes to myself regarding what I'm thinking about.

I'm guessing in shorter games controlled by time, it's a little harder to annotate as you go.

Is this even a stupid question on my part?

Bill_C

Not really. i try to remember what i was thinking as the move went along and then add also some insights as to what i see in the position later.

Frustrating draw here

Here is the second game of a 2 game series that was a better match than the first but my ooponent showed extreme resilency and forced me to prove my win. The last 23 moves in correspondance were played in 20 minutes and half were conditionally replied moves. 3dy/move again.

Vengence:

even if you were to have played 27... Nd5, you would have just barely been able to get a draw. The line busted out on move 18. There 18... f6 holds the position soundly. Black should have little compensation there if he has anything at all.

GG being able to get the repetition there.

In your one and one matches posted here just recently, Black has a crushing game after 11. Re1? 11... Ng4 exploits this weakness fully though I think 12. g3 may be the only real move for White following and the accepting the loss of the Rook on the fork. In the second game, 6... Qd4 is too ambitious. Bc5 and Nd7 or even Be7 and Nd7 were far better though there were other plays such as Bd6 and Qe7. You did well to capitalize on the weaknesses in the position for Black here though. The outposting capture on move 20 was really the most likely deciding factor here as you nw set up double attacks on the position at b7 and f7 as you correctly stated above and the lift maneuver was very well thought out and executed. Once you got Rf3 played, the game was over for Black here.

Good work in use of tactics and execution of plans here.

There's a 3|2 Live Chess game, I played with my friend. Very interesting and dubious, especially around my castling. He lost on time & we had really little time from move 30. Check please! :)

I much prefer 5 minute games over anything else, and I thought this game showed how your initial moves really do affect the outcome of the match. First time annotating a game, so any constructive criticism would be fantastic.

Bill_C

The rule of thumb I tend to use in attacking is simply to concentrate on a focus of a plan and make moves outside that plan only to respond to a threat that is greater than my own threat, then resume the attack. Also, it is good once you have a place you can safely do so to consolidate your position to ready for continuing the attacks later. Most of my losses occur from one of to three things:

  1. Taking a piece/pawn that is not inherent to the position
  2. overextending pawns that must be covered by pieces and once deflected are defenseless
  3. Failing to regroup pieces once an attack starts to lose steam, usually the result of as positional or in between move.

This type of play usually requires a great deal of tactical play and to a lesser extent, positional understanding as well.

What I have found in playing both OTB and Blitz games, both IRL and online, is that Blitz is great for practicing openings and tactics but like Nacho Libre and his wearing the stretchy pants, is more for fun than anything else. That is not to say that Blitz is bad overall (several players I play in OTB games that are strong also have phenomonal BLitz games), but that even players at the 2000 level and above do not necessarily consider this to be serious chess. Being a purist, 10 minute games are my limit really as 5 minutes means 5 less minutes that can result in horrible blunders.

When I play a lot of Blitz though, I notice my OTB play and even correspondence play tends to suffer as i am still playing in Blitz mode even though I have more than enough time to look over the positions to find the best move available.

Still both of the last posting players had some really nice games here. Best of luck in more of your Blitz play and keep posting here if possible.

Your opponent definetely didn't play too well in the second game vengance.  However, you missed a pretty shot on move 24.  Instead of Qd7, Ng6+ seems to win on the spot.

Yes, I missed the mate in 2 there. That is one of my failings sometimes in that I can see the complex ways to win due to the creation of plans, but then fail to see the simple plans such as the mate in 2 if hxg6 or mate in 3 if Qxg6. Also, most of that finishing sequence was done with conditional moves so once entered and opponent began playing, there would have been no way to change gears in mid cycle. Still, it is good to have a second set of eyes to see those types of things as it gives me room to grow in my play as well. Thx for pointing that out.

Bill_C

Beginning to see better results overall in my game play now by playing slower and staying away from a heavy blitz playing schedule. Have taken draws and wins against 1800-1900 players in correspondence games and OTB is improving as well. Still, the 5 and 10 minute games are pretty fun to play and watch though in the 3 minute games i have seemed to find a lot of automated opponents there so i shy away from that most of the time.

Scottrf

I think one of the biggest factors in correspondence chess here is having the discipline to really think about all of your opponents possible replies and whether you have a good answer. If you don't to even one reply you have to discard the move.

Since I've really spent time to do this, I've lost 1 in my last 23. Still make blunders, but nowhere near as many as when I was just looking at what I thought was my opponents most likely reply.

Bill_C

Absolutely. While I ask that people do not comment on the following game, here is one that is very tactically unbalanced and though i have some sizable advantages, one wrong slip and i could still lose this one. Again, please do not comment on this posting or I will have to delete it in the interest of fairness to my opponent.

This is very complicated still and the continuation after Rxg4 for White seems best play to make White prove the win or take a draw here. A month ago I would never had been able to see or get into this type of game and would likely be saddled with a losing position.
