Hello, I recently played a game aainst an opponent and he just flat out resigned. I was 2 points ahead in material but he seemed to have a decent defence and could have played a decent game. any ideas?

We all make bad moves. Resignation can be a bad move.

There are those players who when playing white think they have to be on the offence all of the time. As soon they are forced to play defence they simply shut down, it's simply not their style to play defensively as white. No come-from-behind victories for these people. They are essentially quitters when the going gets tough. >:[

Out of interest, what was your planned next move?

Well, being down a knight in a game, is a definite loss, unless you blunder back. You were slightly lower rated, and I wouldnt have resigned, but it was clear that the game for black was dead lost.

It was a lost game for him, more material would soon be traded off and you could send it into an endgame without too much trouble. In general it was a very resignable position, down a minor piece. As long as you play solidly there's no reason you shouldn't be able to simplify and win.

Of course, I also like the pizza theory.

You shouldn't resign that early unless you are a master playing a master. Your opponent could always blunder or you could always find a way to force a draw.

Don't resign in the beginning of the game just because things are going badly for you. See what happens. Make your opponent earn it.

I was thinking about rook to C8 to get my rook on a semi-open file also to challenge his pawn

Why did he resign?  For the best reason of all:  canadian bacon & pineapple.

Avatar of kjbjkb
