why do people make mistakes such as this one?

I was up a rook but down a knight+2 and position was a dead draw, since those pawns were connected around the king.

I offered a rook trade by putting my rook in an exchange square but idk what he was thinking and he played this..

why do people make this kind of mistakes? i just didnt get this.. questioning the nature of this motivation tbh

It's pretty common in 700-1600's to sometimes forget that even though they have a double attack and discovered attack, the piece that is attacking the enemy piece through a discovered attack may be captured by the enemy piece.
