First of all you're not supposed to play dxc5 on move 4 against the french. Play something like c3
french should be banned
I´m very much fond of these Video Series about the french from Simon Williams (I like his style much). https://www.chess.com/video/player/why-simon-loves-the-french-the-advance-variation
Shure, I don´t know if you are a member who can see videos, but if, I recommend strongly to have a look at it

still thanks for suggestion. simon is one of the best at teaching. i'll look around on the internet.
I love the French. You check my study for more details on the French but I can give you some advice on it.
nearly nobody is taking the c5 pawn so early. mostly people, who hope (hopechess) for Bxc5 with a following Qg4 which is one of this traps the trapper himself falls for it if the opponent don't follow the path. So I would not put too much efforts in this variant.

That is true but I have faced a few people that do that. Also, at the lower levels, it is going to be more commonplace and they could try the Qg4 idea. Also, it was just one part of the study as the author does go into the main variations and I added Jonathon Schrantz's prep against 6.Bd3

I see nothing wrong with 4...Bxc5,
5.Qg4 Ne7! is a typical French reaction, which noone playing the French should be scared to play- it happens in a lot of lines.
White should probably ignore the g7 pawn and develop, but then the Qg4 sortie can be dismissed as a cheap trick.
Of course 4...Nc6 is a good move, and IF white is sane it may well end into something like the 4...Bxc5 line (5.Nf3!) - but Black can also play "hope chess" and hope for (4...Bxc5) 5,.Qg4?!

I really liked the ignore Qg4 and develop idea. Now this is real chess. thanks ![]()
@EKAFC white losing rook line is new for me. I'll check your study, it looks interesting.

Whatever works for you. It's just more calm with my approach and you don't have to ruin your kingside either. I'm still working on Part 2 of the study where I will cover the Winawer, Rubenstein, Steinitz, etc. Although I've been more focused on my other studies as even at about 1650 on Lichess, hardly anyone plays the Classical Variation.
Thanks for checking out my studies. I really appreciate it
Why should reach be banned, as far as I'm concerned, as your rating goes higher and your opponents ratings increase, French is like any other opening
Ya French should be banned
Morons should be banned!
Only a complete and utter moron would say a legal opening should be banned. White has 20 legal moves. Black has 20 legal responses. 400 possibilities. Don't like 1...e6 in response to your 1.e4, your problem! Find something else! Your problem, not mine! Can't deal with the pain, take up Tic Tac Toe! About the right game anyone for someone with the level of intelligence to say or agree that a chess opening should be banned! Although, come to think of it, Tic Tac Toe might be too complicated for you as well. Take up Candy Land!

Keep in mind that the OP thinks he transposed into a French here.

I didn't quote the OP. I quoted a fool that was a few posts below the OP.
You might want to see the comment I quoted in response to. Not all responses are to the OP. If you "assume" that, you make an a$$ out of u and me!
There is nothing wrong here.
I prefer the ...Bb7 line because it is a waiting move and it can set up a trap
Works very well even at 1300

It also throws people off since they are more used to the Qb6 idea. Also, if they play Bd3 on their next move after Bd7, it can lead to some trappy lines starting in Chapter 13 of my French Study
But it´s you, who made a mistake at the opening. If your opponent wold know how to play, you would be after: 4.cxc5 Bxc5 5. Qg5 in some troubles. The opening explorer shows, that far more than half of the games with this situation are lost for black.
This is two illegal moves out of three. Not bad at all!
oh yeah, one should not write drunk.
I stand corrected.
