This is a rough translation from a norwegian Guinness book of Records, from 1968:

The shortest game ever registered between two grand masters, was in four moves. Lazard defeated Gibaud in a chess cafè in Paris in 1924.

I’ve played this game twice on this site (inspired by looking at Gibaud—Lazard in Chernev, 1000 Best Short Games of Chess)

For now, I'm reading the article about "how to play chess" and in this article said the Magnus Carlsen. Is that mean the he is greatest of the all time or he is the best in the current period?

Well, follow-up to this thread post of 16 years ago, with some verdant responses given already so I'm mentioning 16 years just to highlight, and I've also went over to the list of shortest game in the world, and they have listed those games also where the opponent didn't come and resulted bye, so I'm not counting this. But ,And the original shortest game in history was of Anand where he resigned under 10 moves. Thanks

And the longest chess game in the world was played in 1989 between Ivan Nikolic and Goran Arsovic in Belgrade. The game lasted for 269 moves and over 20 hours, and ended in a draw.

I think this is a wrong statement... THe two move checkmate is the shortest game in history... i even know some people who resign after thier first move, SO THIS IS FAKE! ;)

But he's wrong. Neither of them was a GM.

Lazard died in 1948, before the first GM titles were awarded by FIDE in 1950. Gibaud apparently never got even an IM title. They were both French national masters.

Also, Lazard denied that he ever lost in 4 moves in a serious game, so the game probably was some blitz game played casually. Or it may be a complete fiction.

Aside from Irving Chernev, 1000 Best Short Games of Chess (1955), where else does the game appear?

Magnus Carlsen once had a game in zero moves

a much faster game is possible; white plays f3, black plays e6, white plays g4, and then Qg4#
