@ IM Squarology:

With all due respect to your title and staff status, you do seem a mite power mad. Wink Unless of course Erik brought you in as a forum "enforcer" to start a new era of "trollfree" forums.  That would take a lot of the fun out of the forums, but it's obviously not my call.

I won't tolerate any trolling in my threads because I put a lot of time into them.

Thanks for letting us know. Now I know that I need to refrain from posting in your threads :)

Macer75, in a forum you're up for Troll of the Month and was wondering whether it's intentional or incidental. It's a sincere question.

Well, take a look at who the Op of that thread is.

SebLeb0210

+1 @squareology,you could have just blocked that troll instead to stopped him being in your thread. And I am seeing this stupid thread here for being popular for the wrong reason.

what wrong with that ?

Yes, that is a mark of adulthood.  No matter how august the authority; should it demonstrate abuse of power, adults speak up in protest.

I gave him a warning and he provoked me trying to be clever. If he wants to do that in his own threads, it's totally fine but he did it in my thread. Everybody has the right to create a Chess.com thread to share his/her ideas and chess moves with the world without having to worry about a troll coming in and messing things up.

This is not merely a personal issue, but one that challenges the fundamental sanctity of the Chess.com community.

A person like that often has very little to offer once his act goes down. In the following thread, two members reported being harrassed by him: http://www.chess.com/forum/view/off-topic/weirdo

I'm really sorry for those who think I am power hungry but I can't allow such things to occur especially since there is "STAFF" beside my name. What if my employer starts looking through the forums and sees complete trollish anarchy? Who's going to take the blame then?

Chess deserves respect.

IronTiger, of course, it is fine to voice your thoughts: If at any point you think I am abusing my power you can contact support and ask them to reconsider: http://support.chess.com/ I hope this doesn't scare you away from the forums. I'm not here to muzzle people left and right; I'm here to read the interesting topics in the forums and learn.

The concerns have already been voiced : the question is whether you would have done the same, had the trolling been done in another thread than yours. If not, then it is abuse of power, if yes, fine. There might have been good reasons for your move (harassing other members etc.), but you wrote only bad reasons at first, IMO.

The fact that you are an IM and staff does not protect you from trolls, but on the other hand it does not make trolling more disruptive in your threads than in others' (ceteris paribus, ie for the same trolling amount/intensity). (again, I did not see that forum, so I cannot tell, and anyways I am not setting the rules on trolling)

For the rest, I am not to afraid of being muzzled, and I do not see the need to file a ticket until you repeatedly "power-abuse" without taking any criticism, and you sound too reasonable for that to happen.

Yesterday my teacher told the story of the turt , the fly and the spider. The turt and the spider are very close friends , they form a team. The turt is an irresitable food-source for the fly and they act like flies do. Once a fly comes near the turt and takes a nip , he suddenly finds himself caught in the net of the spider. The spider then kills (and or eats) the fly , or bans him from chess.com for two weeks.

I have been tricked. There are no virgins on my island other than me !

Your granddad loves you.

Scottrf

Hmm, I've heard about those types of people on the internet ^^

Improve his shining tail,
And pour the waters of the Nile
On every golden scale!

I'm not sure if it's illegal or just creepy to use a minor's photo as your profile pic...

pelly13

@Scottrf:

Ask SebLeb or the spider. I have been reading the Chess.com rules concerning profiles and it says nothing about limitations on the use of :

  • Avatars
  • Real name
  • Nationality
  • Time sector
  • Profession

The internet and chess.com assures one's anonymity . Things like profile contents don't neccesarily have to be true. The only true thing regarding chess.com is that I have a number and this number is related to my email adress (and IP )  and private profile data . They keep that data in a secure manner.

pelly13

I've been so free as to copy part of a remark I made on another thread.

On the net , you are anonymous. You can be anybody you want people to think you are.You can even be omnipotent if you just change your nationality and fiddle with your time-sector on your profile.

Some of you might have noticed I have recently had a complete make-over of my profile and changed large parts of my "indentity". Since I did that , I received quite a lot of messages on my profile mostly about the avatar.

Reading SelLeb's lessons on this forum , I was initialy lured into thinking he really was the boy in the photo. It didn't take me long to find out he was an adult with a very clever tactic to satisfy his masochism and how to induce a reader to react to his posts. He (un)willingly exposed that this is the real aim in one of his post.

The thing is , when I read someones posts I make a mental picture of the writer. The more I read his/her posts the more I make adjustments to my model. The strange thing is however , that I seem to be prone to optical delusions when it comes to members having an avatar showing real people in normal situations. I have the tendency to believe what I see . No brains working here , but something very primal.

Is there anybody else that suffers from this weakspot too ?
