1700 Blitz without Openings

Is it possible to get to and stay above 1700 Blitz on this site without Opening knowledge? Just wondering what it takes to get to that level. Do most 1700 players have Opening knowledge?

Ya we have some opening knowledge, but I learned most of my opening knowledge around 5 years ago, I have barely studied it since, and I am an 1800 blitz player. What is really necessary is lots of tactical skill. Beyond that you want to know how to actively position your pieces in their best spots, how to make plans and coordinate your pieces towards a common goal, and enough about endgames to convert positions in which you're a pawn up to a win (in most cases).

Just learn the basic lines to openings so you can get to a playable position, after which feel free to deviate from theory.

Thanks guys - some good info there - going to get some tactics material and an Opening DVD.  For starters, I'd like to get to and stay above 1200 Blitz - currently 136 Wins - 105 Loses - avg op 934 - not bad for a recent return to the game
