Well, at least now you have something to do with you hands that you can do in public places.

Well, designated public places I suppose.

another rehash of a very tired overdone topic...

playing against the clock can be more about time control than material advantage...if your material down and opponent is close to time then complicate the position...if your material up and short of time either mate damn quick or secure the draw by reducing opponent to insufficient material to mate...either way dont complain, whine, cry over spilt milk or display your hurt pride. If you cannot handle the clock then play tiddlywinks in the park!

Truth be told, more often than not, it pays to be disrespectful to your opponent.

No body gets paid to be a good citizen; but if you mug an old lady, you might come off with some easy money.

Is this a life strategy for you?

Of course not! But why would anyone be bad if it didn't pay? There are laws against being bad. If it didn't pay to be bad, there would be no criminals.

I suppose I would have to ask for a definition of 'pay'.

Some people are bad because they feel good about bringing others down.

Does this count as a payoff?

Yep. I read I'm OK, You're OK many years ago, and that was exactly the term that they used for that type of interaction.

*temp thread hijack* Does that mean you got extra time for downgrading?

I meant financially when I was talking about criminals - people who cheat and steal ...

We could be talking about greedy corporations, too.

This may be just me, but I find it incredibly rude when a player plays out a lost scenario.  And I'm talking Queen-King vs. King type scenarios.

When you have a king vs. queen king or rook king, and you don't resign this is what I hear, "Well you're bad and I assume you will mess up and get me a stalemate."

Maybe it's just me, but not resigning in those situations says that to me.  Personally I assume everyone I'm playing is fully capable of finishing such end games and just resign.

[...]

Maybe I'm just petty, idk.

I can understand your viewpoint, but I really must disagree with you.

One of my principles is to avoid resigning. Part of the reason is simple: you never know. Another part of this reason lies on another principle of mine, which is to make things all through to the end. I may be losing, but I shan't give up; I shall keep on fighting to the end.

In this specific case, it might be that you will accidentally stalemate me; that is part of the rules of chess.

If, upon my insisting on playing out such a lost scenario, you hear me saying: "Well, you're bad and I assume you will mess up and get me a stalemate", then I'm sorry, but that's not what I'm saying. All I'm saying is "I shall not give up". I am by no means saying you're a bad player; neither am I "assuming" you will stalemate me (I am only, at most, simply considering that possibility). I will probably assume just the opposite: that you're a good player and that I will be likely to have lost within just a few minutes.

You seem like a very nice guy; otherwise, you would not end your post so humbly as with: "Maybe I'm just petty, idk". I appreciate that. Please do not take any offence if I, or anyone else, ever do this to you. No-one wants to be mean to you. Seriously. Just try to understand our viewpoint instead of hearing things we do not want to say.

Thank you for being so nice and gentle. Happy games!

Tonight an 1200 player here (and a very nice fellow, by the way) resigned against me in blitz, in a position in which he wasn't at all inferior. My guess is that at the heat of the moment he believed that he was down a piece.

Sometimes you simply get lucky - your rating tends to blind people...

Avatar of solskytz

No no... we played another game after that, and then had some pretty relaxed conversation...

It's inexperience, mixed with a bit of over-respect for the rating difference.

Maybe he would have lost that position anyway eventually - but at that moment he wasn't inferior and resignation wasn't objectively called for.
