Why do people accept challenge for  a Live chess game and then abort ? Whats all that about ?

Avatar of DrawMaster

I'm guessing there are several reasons: a) not the color they wanted, b) thought twice about playing the opponent they selected, c) decided they didn't really want to play a game after all (e.g., scared, need to go), and d) they have no idea what chess etiquette is, having never played a single game of OTB chess for stakes.

Those are my guesses. I never abort a game that I have agreed to, so I can't add my personal reasons. I have aborted games as Black after waiting a minute or so for the other player to move and seeing no response.

We may never know.Frown

The only reason I've aborted a game is that I was black and the other person didn't move for 3-5 minutes.

It happens quite a lot on chess playing sites. I dont know why it happens but perhaps it has something to do with playing an opponent that is too weak (or too strong) or maybe the person lost to you and doesnt want to play you again.

they could have pressed the wrong game

Thanks for the repies, but since I joined this site, I would say 60% of the seeks I place are accepted by

i) people who just abort instantly

ii) people who just sit there and dont move. Weirdly, when I am white, they are black, and their clock doesnt go down even though I have moved (is this a connection issue? - though I have good broadband and am using firefox)

My point is this is happening way to many times to be accidental. Why do people accept seeks if they dont want to  play ??!?

I think there should be a limit of 3 aborts in 24 hours, if you exceed this then you lose 100 points. Why not ?

why not? because often I am forced to abort games when my opponent doesnt move.  In some cases this is a bug, or some other issue, but sometimes it is just due to a rude opponent who doesn't care about anyone but themselves and has just left my game untouched while he plays another.

The thing I hated most about yahoo was the time it took to find a game because people would just sit there on tables they couldnt be arsed to close, with no intention of ever playing on that table.  Livechess here has unfortunately attracted a whole bunch of people with the same mentality.

Theres no reaosn for anyone to play on more than one table at once anyway, so if that was disabled then things might improve (in my opinion for what its worth)

Sometimes I push the wrong "Start a game" tab and it has me in a 10 minute speed game, so I abort.

Because you lag

I once received verbal abuse (and a thrashing) in a live chess blitz game.

Of course normally I just 'rise above it' and 'ignore it'.  However, on this occasion wisdom and experience were sent to stand in the corner.  I spent the next 15 minutes accepting his open game offers and then immediately aborting. He went wild (verbally), before eventually logging off.  Possibly the most gratifying 15 minutes I've had in recent years.  Still giggle about it now.

its the reality, so just ignore them. maybe they just want to throw you off to ur concentration. and besides, theres a lot of jerks in here. Cool

I often abort games because that damn seek tab is crap..  as new seeks are added and older one removed the one you intended on clicking on bobs up and down the bloody page... sometimes you miss your target.

wow. Im kind amazed that "etikette" is the only option available here, amongst all these bright heads.Smile Im using firefox and it has an ANNOYING ability to ask opponent for another game when i type. Im not sure if this is done by "enter" or "space". But sometimes when i write, the 'selection tab' just popps over to "Rematch" and I end up asking for another game. Ironicly enough, most of the times I type its to END a series of livegames, like "goodbye" or "later" and "thx for the games" etc. Sometimes it even happens multiple times in a row.

SO.... maybe THIS answers ur question? If so u might wanna direct ur anger towards the developers and not the players. Tongue out

The fact that black's clock doesn't start until he makes his first move is not a connection issue, it's on purpose.

On a side note, I do sometimes accept challenges by mistake (such as if i click right after the list refreshes).

I frequently try to click on a match, but another appears as I am clicking. Instead of the 1 0 game against a 1750 opponent, I find myself in a 2 12 against a 760. I abort these ALWAYS and it happens daily.

OTOH, when some poser beats me on a fluke because of a mouse slip or because I've been drinking for several hours, they often abort the rematch. These aborts stem from a lack of manners.

I think it's bad manners to blame a loss on "drinking for several hours". That is NO excuseLaughing

Wow you are patient. I usually abort after thirty seconds.

Avatar of kyska00

sometime I select the wrong game. the selection sheet updates just as I go to click on a 5min. game and I end up with a 30min game that I have no time to play.
