Aborting Games Policy Question

so I've been aborting games with anyone who disables chat automatically, just as a point of principle. recently I got a message from chess.com saying that I could be restricted to only play with friends if I continue to abort games or something like that. so my question is, am I not allowed to have a preference towards people who don't automatically disable chat? I just feel it's rude to Auto disable chat like you're worth playing a game of chess with not worth talking to. I simply won't play someone who disables chat. if I get banned or punished for filtering who I play with I won't be coming back to chess.com, not that anyone will miss me or anything.

Well good for you, standing up for principles and all that.  Still, most folks who abort do so for one simple reason: they want a specific color (usually white).  Pretty hard for chess.com to distinguish so no one gets to abort as a filter.  Why is it so necessary for you to chat?  I mean I always say hello or best wishes for a great game or whatever, but if no one answers, it's just not such a big deal.  Not trying to be annoying here, but do you also get mad at folks who don't return your greeting in chat, or is it just the disablers?

oh I was just having a rant since I was mad haha, I just don't like people who all together disable chat so I choose not to play them. I'm not even particularly chatty, it's just the idea of them not wanting to talk to anyone at all turns me off. like they want to have their cake and eat it too, if you don't want to talk then go play a computer.

Understand that they - myself included - are probably just avoiding "thrash talkers" or they - myself included - have had enough of bearded guys who are verbally abusing them.

bearded guys verbally abusing them? is that supposed to be some sort of a jab at me? I don't know exactly what you're getting at.

Mr Blood N. Ashes, don't be like taxi drivers in the Philippines who are choosy with their passengers. Passengers want a ride. Chess players want to play.

Just a clarification: I've never encountered verbal abuse here. Typographical error there. I only once encountered a very nosy and strange opponent. That's when I set chat "on" for friends only.

Let's get back to the topic- aborting games. You are not allowed to abort more than occasionally-- because your house is on fire, etc.  You can't use it to choose opponents.

If you do abort too often, you get put in a five minute timeout delay before you can get new games and you are put in a special group where you are matched with aborters and disconnectors.

If you do it often enough, the abort becomes a resign key.

Don't abort.

I agree that it is mildly annoying to wonder why you have been blocked.  Over the board chess practically requires some kind of acknowledgement of an opponent and a handshake before the game.

However, having the ability to disable chat is very useful for the few females on this site.

Perhaps they could allow you to send a peremptory nod and handshake.

If a player disables chat , I just let the clock run till game auto aborts... for the first 5 games in a row there's no penalty.... this option is better than selecting abort right away.. I'm in the middle  on this ..yes some have been abused on the chat ...and conversely some chat disablers are just engine using cheats and don't want to read players saying so!

Most of time I ignore people’s comments on Daily chess. I bet it’s only about 10% or less of all my games that someone would message me anyway.

My experiences. If they disable chat 1. for consulting engine intermittently after each move so you can't question it or pass any comments.2. for fear of opponent distracting them and lose their time.Cheaters employ many tactics.

1. start the game late.so they switch on the other computer or engine.Usually 14 to 18 seconds

(in live chess play only 10 minute games hence can speak of it only.)

Leave in between the game and come after a long time ranging from 3 minutes to 6 minutes still manage to win the game.because after re-start his opponent has to and he doesn't need to spend time thinking of moves, play it only.

I usually block a player immediately after the game if suspect him of cheating.

other observations.

The other day a player 60 points less than me(Indonesia). Each time disconnects for a move .

Asked him if he was practicing in between.Said poor internet connection.each time when he comes back his lag is low and shows excellent connection.

Another real experience. The player went off when he had 9 minutes on the clock and I also had almost same time left.Came back when he had about 3 minutes and some seconds and I had my full 9 minutes.Knew couldn't win against him and adopted defensive game to draw only and time wasting tactics.Eventually I won (the only time I won against a cheater). His mistake .His overconfidence. He should have come back when at least 5 minutes were left for him.

Another game was watching 1500+ ,10minutes blitz tourney.(not a participant). a 1636 player went off at 9.43 and came back at  5.44 time left he quietly defeated his opponent rated 2147.

He was certainly a good player .next game lost to a 1793 and won the next one against a 1624.

All were good matches. The 2147 player lost because he was under time pressure due to bad move in strategic terms and the 1636 was enjoying his game as he had all the time in the world to enjoy and complete his game.although deviated from the topic but some factor about disconnection also came in hence the detailed answer.

Can you even disable chat on the app or just the website?
