chess.com has all kinds of people. just keep playing and ignore people who are here for pride, trash talk and rating points.
most people on chess.com won't do that. I've run into a few but for the most part people are friendly enough.
Hi SylvaPhox, this is actually a really good site, and a lot of decent people, unfortunately spoilt by a small minority of idiots.
You need to block them & report them, this is done by pressing the '?' found at the bottom of the menu, and select report abuse.
Hope this helps, you can contact me anytime if you have any difficulties.
With a 1494 rating you're better than the great majority of players here at chess.com.
For some, you will always be a bad player - even if one day you reach a rating of 2494.
Any abusive player should swiftly lose his communication lines to you - you have "disable chat" (during the game) and you have "block member" (during or after the game) - you will never have to worry about such a person.
Apart from that - sure, chess.com is tons of fun.
For goodness sake Brian, don't let the idiots win, I would be honoured to give you a game, just send me a challenge anytime my friend
The nasty remarks tend to come out of the blue, don't they? I'm not sure if I'll continue past the 18th (when my trial membership runs out) but I've been into the tactics puzzles for the past week and they are very interesting.
If someone told that to me during a game I would disable chat and block without a blink.
In my case, as I'm a pretty strong player, I would also raise my level of alertness for foul play from that person (in that specific game, which is the last one he will ever play against me at chess.com).
Brian; Please join this group. Everyone will treat you with the respect that all 78 yr old's deserve and expect. https://www.chess.com/club/geezers
There are other Chess sites. The other ones have better tactics puzzles and their analysis engines are not messed up like the one here. Good luck!
Why let some random jerk get to you? Disabling chat is cool, blocking would proper, but ignoring the ignorant comes to mind, too. I'm 60 and I've had some of the same treatment (wait until they start accusing you of using a computer in blitz--I had a good laugh on that one), but I never respond in kind--I mean, after all, if they were paired with me, then they suck, too, whether they win or not. There are better people here to play, and you must have learned by now that you won't be accepted by everybody, so enjoy the good sports and ignore the ignorant ones. Hope this helps.
If being told you suck is the worst thing that has ever happened to you in 78 years, you have lead a,sheltered life. Do you quit every time someone is rude or makes a comment that offends your delicate sensibilities?
If you really are leaving, can you gift me the rest of your membership? If chess.com has taught me anything, it is that I also suck at chess.
I am 78 years old and I have not played chess for at least 25 years. It can be lonely when you get old and so I joined Chess.com in the hope that I might enjoy playing chess once more. I obviously have a lot of catching up to do before I can give any of the members a good game; but I am trying. I was therefore somewhat dismayed today when, having lost to an American player, he posted the comment: "YOU SUCK." This has been troubling me all day and I have come to the conclusion that I have misjudged the site. I didn't expect to have to put up with unsportsmanlike and uncalled for abuse and I now think I might be better off leaving Chess.com. I'm sorry because until today I was enjoying myself and my life was beginning to take on some meaning once more.
