Hello everyone! I noticed in my games that my weakest point is defending. I am really good at calculating when I attack, but really bad when I defend. I’m also pretty good at squeezing the wins from slightly superior positions, but I am not very resourceful.

I need a book about defending that I can order from Christmas. I need something for the most advance category, since I need prefer to read things that will really chellange me.

Any suggestions?

You could take a look at The Art of Defense in Chess by Soltis, Secrets of Chess Defence by Marin, or Practical Chess Defence by Aagaard.

What is the difficulty of each of these books?

I think that I listed them from easiest to hardest, but none of them are for beginners. I'd suggest googling them and reading some reviews for more detailed info.

I learned all my defense from Attack With Mikhail Tal

The best book on defence must be My System by Aaron Nimzowitsch. There is nothing more useful for defence than the concept of overprotection, for example.

thanks everyone!

The key to a strong defense is a strong offense. Might not apply to chess, but if you keep your opponent on his/her toes, it’s unlikely they’ll have time to attack.

What are the best books about Petrosian?

Uhohspaghettio1

Remember when Petrosian left his queen en prise against Bronstein in a candidates match for the world title under no time trouble? Not such great defensive mastery and prophylactic thinking that time....  grin.png

Just mentioning it, I know he was a great player.

There are many: https://www.scacco.it/it/catalogsearch/result/?order=crono&dir=desc&q=petrosian

Read George R.R. Martin, A Game of Thrones and you will know all about defense.

Chess-related, yes, the Mountain plays chess!

(why are we all trying to give good advice here to our potential opponents...)

In all seriousness I haven't read the books but also heard that those by Nimzowitsch are great, and of the highest level.

They don't have chess in game of thrones, that is a different fictional game called Cyvasse.

Foolish way to spend ones time. tongue.png

No wonder when we play you always mate me lol

no it's very helpful; when you go through the games you get to see what kind of defensive resources are used. In a book written by Tal you can be sure the opposition will be making the toughest defences.

Tal's opponents learned to defend their kingside pawns so he could no longer win like Tal.

I love me some Tal dynamism but he fell flat against sophisticated defense. Zero wins and 13 losses against Korchnoi. Seirawan went 4-zip against Tal.

the book isn't full of tal wins. It's mostly other masters.

See "How to Defend in Chess" by Colin Crouch and  "New Art of Defence In Chess" by Andrew Soltis.

Both of these books is relatively advanced, and suitable primarily for the experienced, intermediate level and above player.

All right. I ordered New Art of Defence In Chess, but I will keep the other suggestions in mind. Thanks everyone!
