I started looking at London system earlier today and 1 Nf3 has brought me to a very similar position multiple times but I seldom played e3 because I thought it would be a mistake to not attempt to play e4 later also I always played Nc3 early because I thought c3 and f3 weren't accepted

^that's all about London system BTW. I don't know if it's easy to understand what I'm talking about there. I just thought it was interesting how in a lot of my old 1. Nf3 games my setup was like a weak London system.

Yeah if you read my article you can see there are different approaches which are similar.

Which is to say you may have been playing other lines part of the family tree.

Nc3 does get played in some of the Tromposky Attack lines!

In some of the London System lines the move Nc3 gets played if white plays the move order with 2.Nf3 instead of 2.Bf4!

The Colle plays e3 with bishop inside.

To avoid any Queen move hitting the b2 pawn.

You can even play some nice lines in the Colle.

I do plan on writing an article on those as well later on.

Lastly, I know people have told you to try the Ruy Lopez.

I will be honest with you.

The Ruy Lopez is a very complex line!

I do believe one day you will need to play it so you can increase your understanding.

However, if you really are a beginner like you say you are.

I believe you should not play it right now.

Instead I would play another line which I like to call the Ruy Lopez little brother line.

If the Ruy Lopez ever had a little brother line it would be the Italian Game!

It is a line often recommended to beginners as well.

In fact, you might have faced it as black!

I think you might like it as well than later on when you get better you can always change into the Ruy Lopez.

The idea's in both lines are very similar so usually you will not mind the change over!

I have done some very light study on a couple openings but not much and I don't play them. my question is what kind of openings should I look at. I'm not looking for something to memorize just to improve my first few moves in games and learn from. are there any good openings I could learn from. I typically play Nf3 as white or Nf6/Nc6 as black. my rating is like 1100 and I've been playing a little over 3 months I think.

If youre looking to not memorize a bunch of opening lines, then try the London, Colle, and Colle-Zukertort.
