Being a troll on Chess.com is like...

Someone that still uses Myspace ... just pathetic, lame and sad.

Now, I'm not talking about the fine, old school trolling that used to take place in these forums. I'm talking about the new "oh, vote for me for troll of the month! Trololololol" and "here's my troll post - nominate me for troll of the month". Once trolling becomes a popularity contest, it loses a lot of its charm.

So please, stop using Myspace. It's lame. And if you're going to troll on the c.c forums, don't be a sad, wannabe troll. Man up, drop a pair and go hard to the comments.

Seriously, it's lame.

looks like I need to respond here...

I'll respond with my theory of trolling, which I have already posted in a couple of threads. According to my theory, there are 2 types of trolling - hardcore trolling and lighthearted trolling. Hardcore trolling, in simple terms, is trolling that is intended to annoy, or that is not intended to annoy but is in effect very annoying. It is the kind of "old school trolling" that you're talking about, and many people think that it is the only form of trolling. However, there is another kind of trolling that exists, and that is light-hearted trolling, which is trolling that is intended to be funny and entertaining. It seems that my Troll of the Month contests have ushered in a new wave of lighthearted trolling to the forums. Now, I do admit that not all of the trolling is high quality, but that's only because as trolling becomes more popularized, many people who previously didn't troll are starting to troll. It is perfectly understandable that their first few trolls threads won't be of a particularly high quality, but they will help these new trolls gain experience and perfect their art. I predict that after a year or two, or maybe even over a couple of months, the quality of trolling here will improve trememdously, since the new trolls will have had more experience, and become much better at trolling.

Meh...

See, areal troll doesn't stick his toe in the water like that. He goes hard to the hole with something like "this is ridiculous! MySpace May have been down for a few years, but they're making a HuGe comeback" and the try to take the thread off topic to why AOL got a bad rap and how McCauley Culkin has more acting talent in his pinky than Toby McGuire has in his whole spleen.

Trolling is awesome. Besides, Macer's just using code for "this is ridiculous." Also nobody gives a **** about myspace.

Yeah macer, what you're doing ... How to say this - you're like Nirvana. Brought a whole new sound to the music scene, kinda cool, flannel, etc. But that eventually led to Creed.

See the slippery slope you're on?

I haven't seen any real quality trolling on here.  The members here seem to be more mean-spirited and arrogant than in most internet forums, especially some of the older members.

Besides that, this site is over-moderated.  I've seen about twenty people disappear even in the short time I've been here.

... which is exactly why we need light-hearted trolling to fill in the void! Light-hearted trolling is, by definition, not mean-spirited and arrogant, and it is, in a great majority of cases, left alone by the mods.

Yeah EDB ... I'm with ya, I know what's up. But trolling is about being the guy that loves being the guy that everyone hates with pASSIon. The cutesy trolls just really water it down, make it lame for the real trolls.

I'm not sure I get what u mean... There are many definitions of "straight." Which one are u using?

Some of the finest trolls I've seen aren't mean spirited. Arrogant, yes. But what are the qualities of a good troll? I'd say, model your online persona after any member of the Tea Party and you're on the right path.

I mean the "regular" non-troll members here, especially the ones that have been here for a long time.

Oic... well, in that case, the popularization of light-hearted trolling becomes even more important! Because in order to be a light-hearted troll, your posts have to be funny and entertaining, and for the most part it's impossible to be funny and entertaining, and mean-spirited and arrogant at the same time.

As a Tea Party supporter I have to disagree... though I won't engage further in political conversation in order to avoid being banned or muted.

honestly some of the trolling per se is usefull in light of the seemingly lazy forum posters.  Those that for being to lazy to research a question that is asked and answered ad nausium, or posters that are themselves undeservedly arrogant, I feel in these and other a bit of good natured trollings helps to serve those lazy newbs learn a bit of forum etiquette.

Oh Macer...and you claim to be on the light troll path. You're conflicted aren't you? Just come out of the closet then and embrace your dark side. You'll feel a lot better about yourself.

But remember the rule of two, or the whole universe will get wonky.

Avatar of EDB123

Damn you all for your support. Hopefully that ends soon with my trolling. Trollllllllll.

I tend to see myself as a light-hearted troll who occasionally incorporates elements of hardcore trolling into my own trolling. On a scale of 0 to 10, with 0 being the most hardcore and 10 being the most light-hearted, I would rate myself as an 8.5/9. SebLeb would be a 10, and Xieff would be very close to a 0.
