its an impossible question to answer, perhaps ask favourite chess player ever

Fischer was the shooting star, Kasparov and Lasker were better over a longer period

pick one from the three FullmetalAlchemist

Fischer's games were and are still some of the most creative and brilliant in history. They were human in ever way. He was testing himself and the game with every move. He produced more famous games than many other famous GM's combined. He was Bobby Fischer.

Then I pick Kasparov.  But then 2Capablanca,   3Fischer,    4Tal

MyCowsCanFly

Capablanca gets my vote....not sure the best but I enjoy his games the most. I've vote this way in each of the previous 17 threads I've encountered that posed this question.

MyCowsCanFly: About Capablanca, I know.  I feel the same way.  There's just some little bit of magic hidden in his chess that I can't quite put into words.  I said it before to Gambitking, and I'll say it again, if perfection exists in chess, Capablanca is where you'll find it.

Kasparov

morphy! then capa

Mitsurugi

On average, over the course of many, many years, Sammy Reshevsky.  As for who hit the greatest ever heights, Fischer.  Was it Taimonov he ripped apart 6-0?  I can never remember.

Gambitknight

If we're going over a very long period of time, I'd probably pick Steinitz or Lasker before Reshevsky.  Come to think of it, Botvinnik had a very, very long run as well.

Mitsurugi

And Lasker would have peaked the highest.

The trouble I have is that I'm in no way qualified to judge what is great chess.  I can go by reputation, results and games that I've particularly enjoyed, but nothing more objective or absolute.
