I don't think the damage to his reputation was caused by "re-inventing new rules." Besides, re-inventing a "new" rule doesn't make much sense.
By the by, I never understood his comment about chess being like a can of chili.
Rather than Fischer Random, the title could have been constructed by randomizing the letters. Then it could be known by various names including:
Macho Find Errs
Chaser For Mind
He Forms Rancid

Bobby Fischer was an icon to me as he's been for others as well. But he felt like chess was becoming worn out. It became no longer interesting to him. He started using his imagination to add to the game just so he would again have a challenge. I'm wondering how many of you out there feel it would have been better for him to just maintain his title and reputation rather than re-inventing new rules.
