Can i quit?

Ive been playing on and off my whole life, never really knowing how bad or good i actually was. Until I get on here almost 2 years ago and realize In the grand scheme of things im not that good. which to me is unacceptable. I have to be "a decent player". I love this game too much to accept a "beginner rating". So my goal became to become an intermediate player. As of recently i hit 1500 in standard, 1400 in blitz, and 1200 in bullet. with a lot of games played in each catagory to truly justify those ratings.

So i ask you fellow chess players: Have i earned your respect? Have i met my goal of becoming an "intermediate" player? Can i quit satisfied that i have accomplished my goal?

As we all know the ratings on here are wierd. Sometimes inflated or deflated it all depends on the time control and who is cheating. And I accept i am not a natural at this game, and i know there are players rated much higher with little to no effort. So i leave it in your hands... the bloody mob! what say you? Am i a club level player? Have i proven i am not a novice?

Who are you trying to convince?  Until you go batsh*t crazy beating the Russians with your GM rating and all eyes of the world upon you, you're not going to truly impress anyone.  OK, so you can play the local bars and get some apploause, but then when virtuoso walks into the room you're nobody again.  If your goal is to be able to walk down to the local park and kick some ass or find people who have played a few games and tear them apart, you're probably there.  But besides that, what's the point? When is enough enough?

If you're going to quit anyway who cares what anyone else thinks? Does your satisfaction really depend on the opinions of total strangers? As far as being a "decent player" goes I looked at your profile (Live Standard) and saw this:

Todays Rank #38,823 of 682,316 Percentile 94.3%

That looks impressive, especially to anyone who isn't a hard core chessplayer and/or isn't familar with chess.com. I don't know what else to say that really matters if you want to quit, it's your call and should be no matter what anyone else thinks one way or the other. It's up to you, not anyone else, to decide if you achieved your goal(s) or not

If at first you don't succeed, you may have already reached your level of incompetency Dr Laurence J Peter ("The Peter Principle")

If you don't play chess professionally, why should you care about ratings? If you're satisfied with playing chess, go on, otherwise don't, but don't strive for improving your ratings for the sake of it.

Fingerly

Why strive to achieve mediocrity before quitting?  I'd suggest quitting either before attaining mediocrity or after proving to yourself that you are better than average, but not in between.  So, if you are now mediocre, it's too late to quit.  You must press on.

At the very least, considering the time you have already spent at it, I'd suggest the deep study of one or two of the classic instructive chess books that you haven't read yet, and see how it affects your game and your rating.  You owe it to yourself to see that kind of improvement before you hang it up for awhile.

You guys are awesome, i was hoping for some fun in this thread.

I both love and hate Pelikan_Player "bottom line" which is why i want to quit

Fear_ItseIf I believe i can pretty easily my USCF is 20 years old with only 5 games but i am 1435 If i paid the money and did some prep I'd feel good about my chances

And reflectivist  in my self reflection i am satisfied, not impressing anyone... sadly... but currently content with myself and my ability, i am looking to be either shredded or upheld by the mob in my assesment,

either way Im tired and its hard and either i quit or i face down Online Chess and all the time, torture and distrust that goes with it... are they cheating are they not... i dont mind saying i think you all cheat and im the only honest person on here :P

I had no idea about that stat NimzoRoy that does make me feel really good thank you

I really like what you have to say Fingerly and i would do exactly that but without playing live just continuing my own study and maybe finally purchasing a chess engine to play against and analyze... i really need to work on my endgame, its just so boring i dont want to do it

and it is because i love this game so deeply that i get so bent out of shape when i screw up, i go on what the poker players call "Tilt"! and drop a couple hundred points in an afternoon.

Discipline is not my strong point which is why i need longer time controls

LongIslandMark my hope is when i retire i could make it to master ~2000 so i wouldnt be quitting the game just retiring from Live play... i dont think i can improve under these conditions, i might need to step back and try a different aproach rather than stay the treadmill ive been on, i feel like the ~1300 rated players have actually all gotten much better; effectively lowering the rating, so end up not really improving our chess but just learning and forgetting more and more traps

Does anyone disagree?
