Can someone explain why I’m so inconsistent at bullet?

I know why I suck at it (I’m app. 700elo lower than my rapid), it’s to do with how much my mind drops off a cliff when I freeze up low on time. Normally when I’ve got a winning position and suddenly don’t want to mess up the game XD

That’s not what I’m asking here, what I’m asking is does anyone know why I go from this game:

To this one:

Played moments after each other? It doesn’t make sense to me. Like every factor I can think of that would affect my brain were identical.

(It’s bullet, which I’m sh*t at, so please don’t roast the moves too much haha)

Same here....seems like I am capped at around 1650-1900

Could be what you ate, if you had coffee or not, if you slept well (and enough) the night prior. Could be anything. Bullet is chaotic by nature, and sometimes your brain is up to it, other times it’s not. I peaked at over 1900 and now can barely beat 1600’s.

Bullet is something hard to master, but also the easiest to win at somehow. It's alright, bullet relies only on speed afterall. It's who wins that matters.

?

The games look the same to me. Was the 2nd one supposed to be much worse?

Agreed. The playing level looked about the same in both games.

In Game 2, the OP simply misplayed the endgame. It's easy to blunder in time pressure.

Next time @DoYouLikeCurry, just keep your rook behind the enemy's pawn, and meanwhile promote your own pawn.

@ironsteam1 thanks, yeah, I just panic in low time and forget the endgame fundamentals….

Or to put it another way... have a GM give a simul to 1500 rated players, where the simul-giver has to play as fast as a bullet game, and there are enough boards that the 1500 players can think as long as an OTB game.

The GM will win all the games even though Regan thinks GM-at-bullet level is 1300.

They'll win because the "bad" moves in bullet are made on purpose... because they gain practical advantages.

Now, Ken isn't a moron, so he probably understands, and just uses it for benchmarking, which is fine... I'm just saying for the sake of people who may not understand the nature of bullet...

So to bring this back to the OP, both games looked the same, I don't care what the engine thinks.

I’m not sure if that holds for all of mine though - some of my recent games have been absolutely shocking… i just can’t get the hang of bullet it’s really frustrating 😂 I’ve been as high as 1920 rapid, and my OTB is 1511 ECF, so I’m definitely better than this.

@llama_l I like the idea of avoiding most trades, keeping the game complicated… that ought to benefit the higher rated player. Thanks for the tip!

If ur having a problem with 1 minute bullet, I don't blame u. It's a really fast variant of chess. I would recommend 3 minute blitz

Bullet is hard to be consistent at because it requires to make split second decisions and still play to not lose. The reason Daniel naroditsky is so good at bullet is because he has that split second instinct
