Checkmating with just a king and queen

Me: *checkmates for Bird all the time when she has just a king and queen and she asks me for help*

Bird: *still doesn't want me to show her how to do it, even though we literally live in the same house and it would only take a few mins*

Smh Bird ok it's like that I guess. 😭

Actually those are different lol

They are a bit but you can still checkmate.

It took me years to learn how to proper checkmate with a queen because I was already using the rook and king tehnique.

I do, but it's actually harder for me with queen. I feel like getting a draw is a lot easier with a queen than with a rook.

For me, I always had a hard time with the rook.

How ? Lol Till i was 11 i played only the rook-king style checkmate.

@Peace-on_Earth7, we bow down to your superior intellect. Like, how on earth could Cecilia be so dumb. Imagine having a hard time with the rook. The audacity to say such a thing smh.

Oh wait, yeah, that's right, different people struggle with different things...

Peace-on-Earth7

Hmm? And don't call her dumb. She is smarter the most teenagers her age.

Probably you are just ironical but whatever

Johannian07

🤦‍♂️

You couldn't hear the sarcasm just dripping from my post? I was actually reprimanding you, not Cecilia.

Peace-on-Earth7

I didn't say I have a "superior intelect", neither that Cecilia is dumb. AND I've NEVER even THOUGHT THAT WAY.

TBH I struggled to learn Enpassant.

Hi, I have problems with learning how to checkmate with just a queen and a king left. Typically, my opponents are bad sports and don't resign when they just have a king left, hoping for a draw. It frustrates me to great degrees, especially if a draw does happen even though I'm up +12. If any one could help me with finding the best way to checkmate with a queen and king, I'd appreciate it greatly. Thanks happy Okay take a look at this analysis.

Maybe it's a translational issue; perhaps English isn't your first language. But the way you wrote it was as if you were condescending Cecilia, aghast at the thought that she might struggle with a rook. I was simply reminding you that different people struggle with different things; there's probably a few things that were very easy for Cecilia but not so easy for you. It's just how things are.

Peace-on-Earth7

Correct, English isn't my first language.

I know what you mean and I know Cecilia so she knows I didn't mean anything like that. I was just joking around...

Johannian07

I see. Well, no harm done, and apologies if I sounded harsh. I just really don't like condescending speech, so I bristled a bit at it when I saw it.

She wasn't really being condescending, she knows Cecelia as do I and what you said was quite rude. Also to be honest she is great with her English. Please don't be so harsh next time.

BirdSong06

He apologized, so let's just chill. Thanks everyone for helping out. : )

Girl, please...just no. You spelled her name incorrectly; perhaps you don't know her as well as you think you do.

We resolved it already, but thanks for your input. 👍

kotlcfangirl111

I'm sorry for making a typo but that happens.I never said I knew her like the back of my hand and nor do you,we are just people on computers.I'm not going to fight about it so thanks for the unneeded criticism.

Also Abbie I stink at chess but from what I've learned from my teacher you have a better chance if you can corner the king!Hope that helps!

So basically, keep your queen a night type move away from the king always, and force them into the corner. When they get close to the corner, ensure you don’t move the queen in too much where they don’t have two spaces to go. They need two spaces to go so you won’t draw. Then move your king in. Make sure you leave two spaces and don’t let your king make it a draw. Then you’ll be able to checkmate. Example above! Hope it’s helpful!

And if you can't force them into a corner?

Worst possible advice. Beginners usually finish up stalemating and practically all stalemates have the queen a knight's move away from the opponent's king.

No. You have mates with the lone king anywhere at the edge of the board.

When the king goes to the back rank a1,or a8 file

You need to cut it off with a move like queen a2 or something similar so you follow the king until you can cut it off in a backrank

MARattigan super rude. You can force into a corner in any case of queen and king.
