Chess and Real Intelligence

There is so much study and analysis on chess but what is it really useful for? Chess was originally intended to build analytical skills. But chess has become more of memory game with lot of preparation before a tournament. If a good chess player is asked to play chess on a different board (say 10X10 board) or a variant of chess, he is likely to lose the game to even an amateur. If the game of chess is to serve its purpose then players should be asked to play a set of 10 or 20 neat variants and the cumulative result on these variants should be used to judge a person's thinking skills. Even world championship should be conducted with variants of chess. There should be a surprise element on what would be the board size, shape and rules. I feel most of you will agree with this.

Haven't you anything better to do on Christmas day than write useless misinformed info on a chess forum?

Well I'm up for trolling, elfing sounds a bit suspect!

Since you are a gamesgeek, you obviously know better than most. The only thing I know myself is that chess is certainly a limited game, but way less limited than your intelligence.

Change @gamesgeek to @trollseek.  And #.

Thanks for the holiday game.

there is no trolling or elfing. And I have no interest seeking attention. Only few people have tried to explain their point logically. My question is simple: Can an expert in standard chess play equally well given any type of board. Is it proven that the calculation and visualization skills transfer to any other board ?

Grandmasters have a very in depth understanding of the game. It is not mere memorization. But here is my suggestion. Challenge Kasparov to a match on a different board. I am sure if he accepts that Chess.com would broadcast the game live while we all laugh.

He is most likely trolling but when Bobby Fischer said pretty much the same thing and advocated Chess 960 nobody called him a troll.

Who told you the "purpose" of chess was to judge thinking skills?

Nah, those onions are fresh.  This is more appropriate:
