Chess Disagreements

People are always going to disagree about various subjects.  Everyone is entitled to their opinions.  Some opinions are better than others.  If we are having disagreements on these forums which are getting too egotistical, doctrine like or personal it is probably better to just message the other person and keep some comments out of sight.

You are so wrong!  Smile

meserole

actually, arguing over the board sure beats arguing with guns.

Rabid_Dog

At the risk of ending what could be an entertaining thread I actually agree with Billyidle.  Feel free to disagree!

firestare500

rofl why dont you want a entertaining thread? PEople that have dissaggrements

should have a 1v1 in chess. Winner gets to arguee all he wants (wait, he can aready to that...)

What is entertainment?  I am two blocks from a grammer school.  Occasionally in the alley a big crowd of kids (girls and boys) will hover around two boys fighting after school. You know they are out there when the cheering gets loud.  I prefer reason to spectacle.  Check out El Greco's painting of Jesus of Nazareth at Calgary (Toledo Museum, Spain) where some are crowding in for a good look.  This behavior is for pro wrestling matches, not chess matches.  Some heated discussion here is perfectly normal.  Sometimes we try hard to prove a point.  Usually we do.  Egging people on to attack each other, however, is out of bounds.  If chess players ruled the world they would solve all of its problems no doubt.

Imagine, if you will, a meadow swaying to the lightest of breezes.  Two opponents converge on the same spot and square off.  Their wills prepared, the duo take measure of each other and begin their duel.

Iron Chess Master: I see you are using the French Defense!  Prepare for my flying King's Indian Attack!

Castling Dojo: Never!  I shall transition into the Sicilian Dragon and end your King's Pawn School forever!  Wooooooooah!

See!  Chess can be just as exciting as a kung fu movie!

im sorry but i cant agree, disagreements hwlp find new views of other things!!

normajeanyates

I strongly disagree with this topic. There are NO DISAGREEMENTS on ANYTHING RELATED TO CHESS!

By the way, is "This sentence is paradoxical." paradoxical?

Phew, I've seldom seen people change their views during heated arguement. If anything they dig their heels in more and this is when the arguement can become daft. You know that point when your arguing with someone and they start taking it to bizzare extremes, and create a far fetched scenario.

Oh, that does my head in.

As I tried to point out in the beginning, one person posts a comment and  #2 posts a comment belittling #1's judgement.  Suddenly #1 takes offense and says something nasty about #2.   #2 fires back.  Now they will never like each other, and some will seek out the other to try and humiliate him.

I prefer to send a chess player a private message restating my point or criticisng #2's judgement in a non-hostile, non-threatening way; in a concilatory way off the message board.  There are some people here who are trying to prove they are God, or the next World Chess Champion or who have a P.h.D in starting arguments.  You know the ones.  With these people it is simply better to ignore them because they are like cops - they are never wrong.

This does happen quite often - but THIS also happens...

Poster #1 writes something likeThere is a greater variety of pizzas than there are chess positions. (http://www.chess.com/forum/view/more-puzzles/fermats-last-pizza)

Poster #2 and poster #3 reply at the same time - without quoting the original text.

Poster #2: I don't get it. Can you explain why?

Poster #3: You must be an idiot.

Now, poster #2 gets mad at poster #3 - while poster #1 is oblivious to the misunderstanding that has arisen!

BillyIdle

Artfizz,

True, true.  Half of the time people at these posts are having an argument over semantics (or terminology), rather than interpretations.  I just don't like it when things get out of hand and people show that ugly side.  As my father always used to say, "You can catch more flies with honey than you can with vinegar.  Some people I did argue with here have turned into friends because of the softer approach.  If I have something harsh to say, I take it off the posts and tell the person what the trouble is.  This is Chess.com not Smackdown.
