Thanks for the posts. --- Like a lot of other folks I first became aware of Jim Backus because he played Mr Howell on Gilligan's Island. Of course he did a number of films as well including " It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World ". One film that I can't remember the name of is one that Backus did with James Cagney. Cagney played a role based on the real life of a star from the silent - movies.
Chess for Oldtimers --- Good Idea !
"Man of a thousand faces" was the story of silent star Lon Chaney
--- Thanks for the info PoolPlayerToo, I was trying to remember the movie and also the person that the film was based on. I think that Lon Chaney did the first " Phantom Of The Opera " film. His son acted under the name Lon Chaney Junior and might best be remembered for his role on the " Last Of The Mohicans " TV series.
i thought he was best known for dracula.
That was Bela Lugosi, not Lon Chaney, though Lon Chaney, Jr. did play the Wolfman.

Backus did the voice of cartoon character, Mr. Magoo.
He also had a hit recording - "Delicious". It is unclear who is the female, but it sounds like Phyllis Diller to me.

Shoot me down in flames if this is wrong, but did Mr.Magoo not coin the joke about some substance being so good, it would grow hairs on a billiard ball? Response from Mr. Magoo: " wouldn't that make the game difficult?"
That almost sounds like a Groucho Marx or W.C. Fields witticism.
Thanks for the posts. Well I see that at long last they have moved this thread over to off - topic. I will admit that we do tend to drift around a bit in this thread lol.
"Off Topic?" Us? Why, we're always discussing chess here! We're constantly posing questions on the subject of chess and endeavoring to develop our chess skills through an exchange of highly informed views on chess strategy and tactics!
In fact, that's Exactly what I said yesterday to my cat Ballou, who reminds me of the Cheshire Cat in Alice in Wonderland, even though she doesn't appear and disappear as a disembodied head that's always grinning. But the point is that I was playing Chess at the time, which is why I thought of the "Cheshire Cat," because it sounds like "chess," so don't tell me this thread is "off topic!"
Off Topic isn't the end of the world :)
Last one out just remember to give the mound of dirt a nice tamping with your shovel though.
Bells_in_the_Night: I've told my relatives that I want to be cremated when my time comes. That way they can send some of my ashes off to one of those places where they make artificial diamonds ( as in the song lyrics: " I'm just an old lump of coal but I'll be a diamond some day " ).
Time for a funny item: After a particularly bumpy landing, the passengers were still shaking as they filed off the airplane. Even the crew were visibly pale as they uttered the standard farewell at the top of the steps. Nevertheless none of the passengers mentioned the landing until the very last person off, a little old lady, gently inquired of one of the flight attendants, " Tell me, dear, did we land or were we shot down ? "

Ineresting point.
Go ask Alice
I think she'll know.
Got that one! Rebel Without a Cause -- James Dean, Natalie Wood, Sal Mineo. Backus seemed just right in the role.
And congrats, kaynight! I can still sing the whole theme song to "I Married Joan," but I've noticed there doesn't seem to be much call for it nowadays .... pity.
