I was looking some coaches on chess.com and I find huge prices loke 100 $ /h (!!!!!!!!!!!). And I read that Caruana spend 40000 euros/year (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) on chess coaches. Considered that most of the strongest players have coaches, is chess a game for rich people?

CrimsonKnight7

I would think its like any other sport at the top levels especially.

FakeMaster

Well I don't think other sports require a huge amount of money, instead it's important hard work.

NobbyCapeTown

Who is Caruana ?

CrimsonKnight7

Well usually at the top level many have sponsors, however not all of them do. For example pro golfers can spend incredible amounts of money. No I am not a pro in any sport, while growing up however one of my best friends's dad was. Also football players can spend a lot of money as well, just staying in shape, and maintaining weight with the proper diet. Body builders, spend incredible amounts of money on supplements, and diets/foods.

I can't speak for all sports, but I would think all the big ones where big money is involved, it would be very costly. Nas car is big $$$$.

Depends on what you want out of chess.  You can buy a board and set for the cost of a hamburger.

It's definitely one of the cheaper hobbies out there.  Way cheaper than fishing, golf, or farming.

If it was just for rich folks, I doubt the Soviets would have jumped on it the way they did.

Young chess player lives in Switzerland, and Italy. But he grew up in Brooklyn, same block Bobby Fischer did.

It takes a significant time investment (or it seems to with me anyway), and I think that's something a lot of people can't afford if they have to work 2 or 3 jobs, so in that sense chess is for rich people.  That's the downside of selling timechunks of your life for wages.  On the flip side though, it is hard to think of a cheaper hobby.

AKDiamond

Have you folks seen the chess played in New York city parks? If you had you wouldn't say it's a game for rich people.

TetsuoShima

bipoison that was a good joke

atarw

its only expensive when you want to pursue the game, for casual players it is very cheap, all you need is a board and pieces.

Didn't Polgar have a Chess center in NY where she taught 4 year olds how to play for several hundred dollars an hour?

There's no way that's true.

There's nothing Polgar could teach a 4 year old that I couldn't and I suck.

GMegaMan

its for everyone. but anyone over 1900 rating are rich and fortunate parasites with too much time on their hands

conejiux

If you are rich... play poker.

TKACHS

Might as well ask if all people named Richard are.....

nameno1had

you most likely will need some form of sponsorship or have to be well to do enough financially that, you can play and. study chess, as much as, most people work for a living in order to become a gm. you might need to pay for lessons from a gm also....throw in travel and tourney fees....it adds up fast....the question can be viewed as rhetorical on one hand, or absurd, many working class people enjoy chess....
